ghost of miles
You guys are kidding about Welk, right? My grandmother used to listen to that garbage and I couldn't take it even then. And a one, and a two and .... No, I'm not kidding about some hipsters being into him. Frankly I think it's a bit of the usual ersatz hip--"let's take some total kitsch and dig it"--but I know several people who've sung his praises in the past year or so. And then there's Upstairs at Larry's.
Christiern
Don't forget that Johnny Hodges recorded an album with Welk. And did you know that Welk recorded for the Gennett label in 1928? The tunes are: Spiked Beer (from beer music to champagne music?)Shanghai HoneymoonDoin' the New Low Down (as opposed to the Down Low?)Are You Makin' a Fool of Me? In 1931, he reorded for Broadway, including a tune called "My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes"
Jazzmoose
I've never been hip. Never. So I guess I can thankfully pass on the Welk...
AllenLowe
check out the Lenny Bruce routine about the junkie who gets interviewed for a job with the Welk band: "Mr. Welk, I have a monkee on my back." "Vee like animals!"
