Mr. Parker from Sony Music was quoted as saying in relation to their decision to sign John Mayer, "The market we're going for is discerning music buyers who know their music, and they want a quality album, whether it's from a new artist or a well-known singer". Whether it's someone who they think will be perceived as "hip" or "quality" or if it's a case of trying to clone some other labels artist or whatever it's all about the$. The more the merrier.
