Harper Barnes' novel, Blue Monday, which concerns the death of Bennie Moten, makes mention of many musicians who were active in Kansas City during the 1930's: Basie, Pres, Ben Webster, Herschel Evans, Joe Turner, Julia Lee, and on and on.

John A. Williams' novel, Clifford's Blues - not about Clifford Brown or even Clifford Thornton - Mentions Sam Wooding, Ellington, Doc Cheatham, Gene Sedric, Tommy Ladnier, Ma Rainey, Garvin Bushnell, Kid Ory (Orey, in the book) , Louis, Bessie Smith, and many other musicians.
