Wes Montgomery: Smokin' at the Holf Note. My first Montgomery cd.

You're off to a very good start! I'm betting it won't be your last. :)

If you like that one, go for "Full House" next--even better than "Smokin' at the Half Note."

If anybody wants "Full House", better order it quick! I have it in my queue for next month, and I got this message recently:

Availability of Full House (Remastered) is limited, and it may no longer be available on its shipping date of 06/15.

Next up for me is Blue Mitchell - Boss Horn.

I've been curious for many years to hear something from Chick Corea's time with Blue Mitchell. Not so curious as to shell out for the Mosaic box, but wondering nevertheless.

It's been a while since I got a 60s Blue Note, so now's the time.

This month's pick is Donald Fagen - Morph the Cat.

Usually something that appeals to me becomes available the week after my monthly shipping date, but this time it came up two days before!

I've got quite a bit of Steely Dan, all but two I think, and both of Fagen's other solo outings, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Released only three months ago!

This month's pick is Hank Mobley - Soul Station.

I feel like I'm the last person here to get this. It's been in my queue since a I joined a year and a half ago, and now it's finally risen to the top.

I'm not a big fan of Mobley's, but I gather that many of you here consider Soul Station to be his best work. So I thought that I would be fair to the guy and give his best album a listen rather than judge him without hearing it.

I thought I had Thin Lizzy's "Dedication: The Best Of Thin Lizzy" at the top of my queue, but I must've been hallucinating. So it look's like it's gonna be "Looking Around" by Sergio Mendes and his merry band of girls & boys.

Should be good summer listening, eh?

P.S. I'll make a "Jailbreak" next month...heh... :w

I'm not a big fan of Mobley's,

Huh??????

On what listening have you formed your opinion?????

It's nearly impossible to believe that any serious fan of the

jazz idiom would not deeply appreciate Hank Mobley's music.

Virtually any of his own Blue Note releases up through "A Caddy for Daddy"

find him in superb form. One of my personal favorites is "Roll Call";

a quintet session from 1960 with Freddie Hubbard aboard. The interplay

among the two is amazing on this. I would say Mobley's playing here is

more aggressive than on "Soul Station" helped along by Art Blakey's generous

sprinkling of bombs, presses and rolls! "Soul Station" is however Mobley at his

lyrical best.

If you prefer the high octane stuff give "Roll Call" a spin.

Hopefully you will eventually "get" what all the fuss is over Mobley.

This reminds me of another stellar tenor with a lighter tone who never

got his due while he was still with us; one Tina Brooks. Hopefully you

will or already have explored him as well.

My pick this month was Dizzy Gillespie - Sonny Side Up. Another album that everybody already had but me.

I have ten in my queue now, and I'm not hot to trot about any of them, particularly compared to the 33 I got from Concord. Hope that something irresistable comes up in the next three weeks!
