Elliott Carter - String quartets Nos. 2-4 (Pacifica Quartet) (Naxos)

First time listening to these. Pretty good.

Nice to hear feedback on the Pacifica recordings. I have old Composers Quartet recordings of #1, 2 and 4. Got the Juilliard box of 1-4, but didn't care for the performances and sold it. Subsequently lost a bit of my enthusiasm for Carter's quartets and haven't tried to track down a 1-5 set...Arditti would be the first ensemble I'd consider, but maybe the Pacifica deserve attention.

Have all the recordings you mention. Will ditch the JQ some day.

Yes, excellent collection! I have to say that I haven't ever been disappointed by die schachtel.
Between them and the NEOS label, it's easy to empty the wallet.
The book is in Italian and English - divided right down the middle - so keep that in mind.
Also, you're dealing with the Italian version of Hörspiel, and so lack of Italian language skills
could be a hindrance but it may not be all that different than listening to an Italian (radio) opera.
Still, a wonderful read and listen. Audio excerpts are here (with somewhat abrupt transitions).

Jascha Heifetz plays Great Violin Concertos
Disc 6, which is a real grab bag -- concertos by Glazunov (op 82), Brahms (op 102), Bach (BWV 1043) and Vivaldi (RV 547).

After this I will be delving in the Ofra Harnoy plays Vivaldi box.

Later (probably next week) I should get around to this box of Telemann's Tafelmusik/Table Music

Just picked this doorstep up from the post office.

Disc 1: 1950s Beecham recordings of Sleigh Ride, Marche Caprice, Over the Hills and Far Away, A Dance Rhapsody No. 1 & 2 and On the Mountains.

The music of spring/early summer to my ears.

My goodness - there's more than a bit of forest murmmering and storming Valhalla in this early Delius.

*****************

Now followed by Disc 2 - some of the gems in Barbirolli versions that I must have in several different formats. This is how I first heard Delius back in 1978:

The Walk to the Paradise Garden; A Song of Summer; Irmelin Prelude; Late Swallows; Appalachia.

A 1982 Golden Crest LP by The Saxophone Sinfonia, conducted by David Bilger - 18 saxophonists (including one of my former teachers), playing transcriptions of Grieg and Bach, along with:

Ronald Caravan - Jubilate!

Erwin Chandler - Sinfonia for Saxophone Ensemble.

No pictures online, as far as I can tell.
