Since the 1960s, Graves (born 1941) has performed internationally with free-jazz luminaries such as Albert Ayler and Sonny Sharrock. Milford Graves Full Mantis takes viewers into Graves's Queens home to meet the relentlessly curious artist. His ruminations on life, nature, and the fluidity of rhythm are intercut with archival performance footage-including a European concert and an ecstatic happening at a Japanese school. THE DISTRICT CULTURAL ARTS FEST in Austin, Texas across multiple venues Presented by Six Square, the District Cultural Arts Fest is an exciting celebration that honors the rich legacy and cultural contributions of Central Texas’ Black community. On September 1, 2018, join Six Square - Austin’s Black Cultural District as they continue creating a nexus of thriving Black arts and culture in East Austin. Visual artists, musicians, poets, dancers, chefs and more will reanimate six sites of historical significance in The District, including: Oakwood Cemetery, Doris Miller Auditorium, Givens Park, Six Square’s headquarters and Huston-Tillotson University. The daytime portion of the festival will feature installations across five sites, and attendees will have the option to take guided or virtual tours of The District. From interactive African drumming and dance to engaging theatrical performances, each site’s events will provide a new context to the location’s history and a curated menu of unlimited food and adult beverages provided by Wines of Dotson Cervantes and Tito's Handmade Vodka. Festivities will culminate at our sixth and final site, the historic Huston-Tillotson University, with musical performances from international, national and local acts inspired from Africa and the African Diaspora.
