Sunday in Tulsa, Oklahoma:

David Amram in Concert: A Tribute to Oscar Pettiford

5:00 p.m.

Multi-instrumentalist and world-renowned composer David Amramtakes the Jazz Depot stage with a tribute concert honoring his fellow Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame inductee: the late, great Oscar Pettiford.

Jazz Hall inductee David Amram has composed more than one hundred orchestral and chamber music workds, while penning many scores for both Broadway and film. He is widely known for his classic scores for the films, “Splendor in the Grass” and “Manchurian Candidate,” as well as the score for the landmark 1959 documentary, “Pull My Daisy” and two operas. Amram is also the author of three books. An inventively funny improvisational lyricist, Amram is a pioneer player of jazz French horn, a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from twenty-five countries. While traveling the world as a conductor, soloist, bandleader, visiting scholar, and narrator in five languages, Amram continues to compose.

Ruddresh Mahanthappa did show up for his concert in Plano. I was really not sure what to expect. It turned out to be a good concert. First part was Rudresh fronting a big band (including faculty members of Collin College and UNT graduates)--playing a mixture of arrangements of his own material and a few songs composed and/or arranged by band members. Then there was a small group portion of the concert, with Rudresh playing material from Bird Calls with the rhythm section of the big band. Finally, the big band returned to play Chillin' from Bird Calls. So it was an actual interesting musical event, especially to hear large group arrangement/performances of Mr. Mahanthappa's music, and his features with the small group.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but:

Sonic Transmissions, curated by internationally renowned bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (The Thing, Atomic), is a three-day showcase that gives equal weight to some of the globe's best free jazz, post-punk, experimental hip-hop, and improvised music. The three-day bash – scheduled to take place from Thursday, September 10 to Saturday, September 12 – includes performances by Joe McPhee, Alvin Fielder, The Young Mothers, Spray Paint, Guilla, and more nationwide artists.

The debut music festival at The North Door (502 Brushy Street in Austin) is built around the Texas-centric powerhouse and Flaten-formed The Young Mothers, which presents jack-out-of-the-box surprises ranging from spirited and moody takes on modern jazz and improv to grindcore and hip-hop side trips. Each member of the six-piece ensemble will present his respective solo project as well as collaborate with the nation’s top-flight improv musicians, such as Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians members Fielder and Avreeayl Ra; Houston-based double bassist Damon Smith, who has played with Cecil Taylor, Marshall Allen, and John Tchicai; and David Dove, a highly-regarded trombonist and founder of Nameless Sound in Houston.

Tickets and more information available at http://www.tektite-records.com/

The festival is supported by Epistrophy ArtsAstral Spirits and the City of Austin through the Economic Development Department/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future. Visit Austin at NowPlayingAustin.com

Percussionist

Born on May 31st 1935 in Philadelphia, Albert “Tootie” Heath was raised in a musical household as the younger brother of saxophonist Jimmy Heath and bassist Percy Heath. In pursuit of a musical career as a drummer, he moved to New York in 1957 and in a few months made his recording debut with John Coltrane for the saxophonist’s first recording “Coltrane.”

Tootie Heath’s career reads like a who’s who in jazz. He has recorded with Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Bobby Timmons, Yusef Lateef, Herbie Hancock, Milt Jackson, Wes Montgomery, Billy Taylor, Mal Waldron, Cedar Walton, J.J. Johnson and countless others. In 1975 together with his brothers Jimmy and Percy, Tootie formed the Heath Brothers band.

A Drum Story-- a unique journey that follows the migrations of drums and rhythms from Nigerian talking drums to the innovations of jazz greats like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. Heath’s includes music commentary on each of the diverse drum phases, such as: Batá drums, New Orleans parade music, and early big band pioneers as well as humorous and touching personal anecdotes from his experiences contributing to some of the most integral decades of jazz.

Jazz Saxophonist

After many years in New York, saxophonist Richard Oppenheim relocated to San Antonio, Texas in 2006 with his wife and longtime musical colleague, Katchie Cartwright. Oppenheim muses on ideas of belonging and unfamiliarity, of how to call where you are home.

Following his studies at Indiana University, he gained experience playing with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Charles Mingus and Lonnie Brooks. On relocating to New York in 1976 he recorded with Ray Anderson, Chuck Loeb, Bern Nix, Bill Goodwin and many more. From the late ’70s through ’80s he performed with Lionel Hampton, Clifford Jordan, Otis Rush, Mick Ronson, Ian Hunter, Foghat, Johnny Winter, Buddy Rich, Bernard Purdie, Jaki Byard, David Johanssen and Illinios Jacquet.

We're back at the Crown & Harp on Sept 21, probably a little longer set but probably starting a little later. so all of you folks who couldn't make it out last time because of the time, resolve all ambiguity about this one. Ken was noble, Ken was good (Ken is always noble and good, at least that I've seen), but Ken, hey, I got it then, and I'll get it for this one.

But if any of y'all don't read this forum and are up late on 9/21, come check us out. Introduce yourself as that guy who doesn't read organissimo, and we'll autograph your bar tab in invisible ink, or something equally appropriate. I will, anyway, I like trying to make friends.
