You betcha.

I have yet to decide if Something Else or Village Green is my favorite, so I'll happily keep on listening to the evidence and make up my mind one of these days.

Arthur, Face To Face and Muswell are pretty high on the list too, and I like Give The People What They Want maybe more than I should.

Ray is supposed to have a solo album out in September I believe. It's been delayed a few times, but this time it's supposed to happen.

Just got into the Kinks recently. I picked up all of their Pye albums through "Village Green" on CD, and have several on LP ("Arthur," "Lola," "Muswell Hillbillies," "The Kinks Kronicals," and "The Great Lost Kinks Album"). So far, I've enjoyed everything I've picked up, although I think either "Village Green," "Arthur," or "Lola" is my favorite.

Great band, though often inconsistent.  Ray Davies is one of the best r&r songwriters ever!

When they were releasing albums consistently, I kind of actually enjoyed the fact that you never knew what you were going to get from one album to the next. It could be great or it could be really subpar. Luckily there was always a little greatness in just about everything they did. However, I'll gladly take subpar Ray Davies songs over just about anything. Yeah, I'm a fan. The Kinks were not like anyone else.

"apeman" is my FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The air pollution is a a-fuckin' up my eyes..." :P

I think I’m sophisticated

’cos I’m living my life like a good homosapien

But all around me everybody’s multiplying

Till they’re walking round like flies man

So I’m no better than the animals sitting in their cages

In the zoo man

’cos compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees

I am an ape man

I think I’m so educated and I’m so civilized

’cos I’m a strict vegetarian

But with the over-population and inflation and starvation

And the crazy politicians

I don’t feel safe in this world no more

I don’t want to die in a nuclear war

I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an ape man

I’m an ape man, I’m an ape ape man

I’m an ape man I’m a king kong man I’m ape ape man

I’m an ape man

’cos compared to the sun that sits in the sky

Compared to the clouds as they roll by

Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies

I am an ape man

In man’s evolution he has created the cities and

The motor traffic rumble, but give me half a chance

And I’d be taking off my clothes and living in the jungle

’cos the only time that I feel at ease

Is swinging up and down in a coconut tree

Oh what a life of luxury to be like an ape man

I’m an ape, I’m an ape ape man, I’m an ape man

I’m a king kong man, I’m a voo-doo man

I’m an ape man

I look out my window, but I can’t see the sky

’cos the air pollution is a fuckin' up my eyes

I want to get out of this city alive

And make like an ape man

Come and love me, be my ape man girl

And we will be so happy in my ape man world

I’m an ape man, I’m an ape ape man, I’m an ape man

I’m a king kong man, I’m a voo-doo man

I’m an ape man

I’ll be your tarzan, you’ll be my jane

I’ll keep you warm and you’ll keep me sane

And we’ll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day

Just like an ape man

I’m an ape man, I’m an ape ape man, I’m an ape man

I’m a king kong man, I’m a voo-doo man

I’m an ape man.

I don’t feel safe in this world no more

I don’t want to die in a nuclear war

I want to sail away to a distant shore

And make like an ape man.

Count me as a Kinks fan.

Something Else is my favorite. I especially like the Dave Davies tunes on that one.

It's been written that "Waterloo Sunset" is the most beautiful song in the English language. I might not go that far, but it is pretty damn great.

What an explosion of talent there was in UK pop in the 1960s! Beatles/Kinks/Stones/Who/Zombies...

And that's just scratching the surface.

Interesting that no one has mentioned Face to Face, one of my faves. The (by now, only sort of) recent Castle reissue includes some amazing non-album bonus tracks such as "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and "This is Where I Belong"; the latter being, in my opinion, among the very best Kinks tunes of all time.

They had lots of hits - in Uk anyway. ery very good band with very sharp lyrics. Autumn Alamanac epitomised the spirit of the 60s and Deadend Street was just marvellous but then so was Lola and Aperman. I could go on and on. Kinks and Small Faces!

BTW did you see the Who at Live8 concert. To my mind they just blew everyone else away.

Love the Kinks... I think I once started a "Kinks Korner" on the old BNBB. I've picked up all of those 1960s Castle re-issues, and, like another poster, go the most to FACE TO FACE and SOMETHING ELSE. VILLAGE GREEN a masterpiece, of course--I just find I don't spin it quite as much as the other two.

How's a later album, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT? I love "Better Things" off that, but haven't heard the rest.

You ain't missing much.

Unfortunately, The Kinks never made great albums. They never got to the Beatles/Pet Sounds level where *everything* was good. So even Something Else has some bad patches. But man, can you do a hell of a compilation. The Pye 2-LP "The Kinks File" was a good one, but even that had to leave off some gems.

How's a later album, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT?  I love "Better Things" off that, but haven't heard the rest.

It's hard for me to separate being 18 when it came out and their almost heavy metal sound in concert they had at the time as far as being objective about the album.

Most of the album is hard rocking, and "Destroyer" references "Lola" in a manner that bothered some fans (though not me.) The 2 songs before "Better Things" are classic bits of writing that may disturb some. In "Art Lover" the narrator professes his interest in little girls but "he's not a dirty old man." Such a song would cause a lot more trouble in this day and age. "A Little Bit Of Abuse" - a song about a woman who stays with her abusive boyfriend or husband contains the line "Oh, so uncouth, Excuse me, is that your tooth?" that is so very Ray.

It's my favorite post-Muswells album and even without the emotional attachment I think it is at least "very good," though if someone likes Misfits or Low Budget more I won't argue.

Btw, Face To Face was mentioned earlier... :w
