Dan Gould
Stumbled across this: Davis Jackie & Harold Land Blowin' The Blues/Red Shirt 7" Pacific Jazz X303 Apparently Teddy Edwards is on the B-Side, but I can't find this title on his two PJ albums, and I don't know where the A-Side might have come from either. So the question is, would these be tunes recorded exclusively for the singles market or would these actually be edited versions of album tracks? As always, thanks in advance! Dan Gould
Thanks. So it looks like "Red Shirt" made it to both the BN reissue and the Fresh Sound thing (which is what I have) but it looks like the Harold Land thing is an orphan that's never been reissued? Dan Gould
Well, I decided to track this one down, and I realize now that the original appearance of the tune "Blowin the Blues" was on JWC-512, The Blues Volume 3: Blowin the Blues. Mike Fitzgerald's label discography page gives these artists on the album: Pepper Adams Bob Brookmeyer & Jimmy Giuffre Richard Crabtree Teddy Edwards Harold Land & Jackie Davis Wes Montgomery Bud Shank Zoot Sims & Russ Freeman My question is, can anyone tell me whether there are any other tracks on this album, other than the Land/Davis, that are unique to this particular album, or were all of the other tracks from other Pacific Jazz or World Pacific albums? Are there any other "orphans" like the Land/Davis? Thanks! Edited August 13, 2005 by Dan Gould

Thanks! ← Among those albums I have, I guess at least these tracks could be called 'orphans': - Al Haig 'Taking a Chance on Love', a September 6, 1952 side with Harry Babasin and Larry Bunker. It's on the 'Pianists Galore' album, - James Clay 'In a Sentimental Mood', with Bobby Timmons, James Bond, Pete Littman, and: - Phil Urso 'It's Only a Paper Moon', with Timmons, Bond and Littman, both probably from the October 1956 'Chet Baker and Crew' sessions. Those two are on the 'Solo Flight' anthology.
