LPs that have never made it into CD

Having found the two MGM LPs of George Shearing with 95% of his recordings with Cal Tjader, I still want them on CD - they sound great, but of course these half-century old LPs have some surface noise. There are several very nice tracks on them - same probably goes for other Shearing MGM material.

Speaking of Vanguard, I don't believe that Larry Coryell's two Vanguard albums with Steve Marcus have been released on CD - Offering and The Great Escape.

these have both been released on CD. i have them both. offering is very nice, but the great escape isn't so good, IMO. HOWEVER-fairyland has never been released. that deserved to be out on CD-a live trio with pretty purdie and chuck rainey.

I'm surprised! I've kept my eye open for them and never seen them. Oh well, I stand corrected.

Tete Montoliu: Timeless LP 12": SJP 111 - Secret Love (released on 1978, recorded March 31 and April 1, 1977), reissued on the 3 LP edition Jazz Stop LP 12": CFE DD-33027/8/9 - Tete Montoliu but, to my knowledge, never on CD.

(I have a scan of it, but can´t find it right now!)

Tete Montoliu - Timeless LP 12": SJP 116 - Catalonian Folksongs (then issued as Timeless/Muse LP 12": TI 304 - Catalonian Folksongs):

Recorded on Dec.9, 1977, part of it was reissued on Timeless CD: CD SJP 107/116 - Solo Piano (1989) which supposedly included both "Catalonian Folksongs" and "Yellow Dolphin Street" LPs, but four titles from "Catalonian Folksongs" weren´t included in the CD.

Some e-mail exchanges w/Michael Fitzgerald today have reminded me of this one:

Gigi Gryce, REMINISCIN' (the Orch-Tette record done for Mercury).

This is a really nice session. Richard Williams and Eddie Costa both add a lot to it. Can't believe it's never made it to CD.

J. J. Johnson -- I think most of the albums he did for Columbia hadn't made it to CD until Mosaic did their set. Good stuff.

And what is it with Bill Dixon not coming out? "Intents and Purposes" is superb.

I think the two Shearing MGM cds are available from the Verve Vault. . . .

There are two available, but without Tjader. I'd rather see them do proper reissues, as the old LPs are rather short and compiled long after the original 78 issues - you never get a complete session on one LP. I'd have to buy a third LP to get me the one missing track with Tjader, but I'm not a completist any more.

I'm not a fan of these issues or LPRs - they spare the label the effort to get it straight, discographically. Session info on the LPs is missing or incorrect or incomplete.

Stanley Cowell - Illusion Suite (I am pretty sure I read here that the tapes were lost. I have been stockpiling vinyl copies!)

Jack DeJohnette - Inflation Blues and Tin Can Alley (I don't think these have made it to disc)

Regarding Mingus's Music Written For Monterrey, Not Played, Played at UCLA (or something like that), Sue Mingus was on a live chat the other day and suggested she will be putting this out on disc. Of course, with her track record I'll believe when I see it (will have to make do with the 1980's reissue in the meantime).

Not Jazz (or?) but I would sure like to see Tim Buckleys Starsailor, not to mention Blue Afternoon.

Both of these were on CD, but are now OOP. They're certainly due for a reissue, though!

As for Intents and Purposes, amazingly Dixon and RCA are on the same page about this not making it to CD - he's moved on to probably stronger work, and RCA is probably on the "Bill who?" by now.
