Sometimes you can say, "this music changed my life". This is one of those times.

I'm thinking about giving this to myself for Christmas. I've procrastinated long enough.

Everything from "Birth of Soul" is in this set, right? So the question really is, since I have that, how much of the other material is essential?

I just borrowed this set from a library. The packaging is a trip! Kind of a "cute" idea, but it guarentees that you can't store it with the rest of your collection, unless you take out the CD's and store the box in your garage or something. I don't know if I'll have time to listen to all of this before I have to return it.

Yes, all of Birth of Soul is in this.

There are some of us who are really tempted to answer "all the other material is essential." I'd have a hard time saying . . . "Well, you don't really need. . . "

I'd say about 80% of the jazz sides and pretty much all the live stuff in the set is essential.

This is one of the best music purchases I've ever made.

Not sure if its my favorite, but I've listened to "Leave My Woman Alone" probably 50 times since I got the set. Something about that song is very addictive.

Yup. The complete C&W recordings is a great box set. I don't have the huge Atlantic box, but I have the C&W box, the Birth of Soul - Complete Atlantic R&B Recordings 3-disc set, and the DCC Uh-Huh 2-disc set, and it's a great heaping of Ray.

By the way, was this set deleted from the catalog? It's showing as "discontinued" at Amazon and I'm having trouble finding it at CD Universe.

This was one of the first sets I put on my iPod when I got one, and its made the music a bit more accessible to listen to in a physical sense (similar to most of my other CD box sets that I've converted to digital format). Its a marvelously creative musical spell that is documented. My appreciation of this music grows with time.

I suspect that it is going out of print. There don't seem to be too many copies around. I got the last one that amazon.co.uk had last week - more than I wanted to spend but didn't want to let it get by me.

Amazon has this as a lightning deal until 6 PT. $79.99. Weird that the Amazon page no longer says "discontinued by the manufacturer"...

Newbury Comics has several new copies at $39.99. I assume that is a good price. They do international shipping too.

I grabbed one a couple of days ago. All I currently own from the set is the material with Milt Jackson so this buy is going to be well worth it, especially at that price.

An excellent set! I recently grabbed the Singular Genius set and can recommend it. Wow, killer mono sound.

Snagged! I already had the R&B box, but not all the jazz sides. For this price, hey...
