"Bird´s eyes" on Philology

EKE BBB

Recommended Posts

There are quite a number of threads with mentions of some volumes of these neverending series on Philology.

From what I´ve extracted, volumes up to 25 offered material previously unissued on CD, while volumes from 25 on, mix some of these recordings with material previously available on other labels.

Resuming....

Which are the "really essential" volumes? (yes, I know this is for "collectors and completists only"). Specially non-available-anywhere-else-on-CD items! Specially with passable sound!

Thanks in advance,

Agustín

Don't think volumes 24 and 25 which have the 1953 Open Door sets (with Bennie Harris, Bud Powell, Al Haig, Mingus and Art Taylor) have appeared anywhere else yet.

Many volumes have some additional material that did not show up in previous CDs before. Will have to recheck on the rest of the issues...

And this one?:

From other threads:

I think Cadence had a lot of these but I don't know if they still do.  Some of the sound is on the kind found in the Mosaic.  There are some sessions at the Pershing ballroom that are very hard to listen to.  Then, there's a session on Vol 18 at a club in LA that's really good sound and definitely worth it.  So, it depends on your threshold.

Another one which I think every fan should have is Volume 18, Bird Eyes/Stardust.  This has the Live at the Finale Club in L.A. from 1946 (Miles, Joe Albany), a session with Benny Carter, Willie Smith, Nat King Cole, Oscar Moore and Buddy Rich, also from 1946, and a 17 minute interview with John McLellan in Boston from 1953.

That said, there is at least one Philology disc that every Bird fan needs.  I forget the volume number, but it has the subtitle of "Bird in 1950."  It contains private recordings that have become widely known as "The Apartment Sessions."  They have to be heard to be believed.

That's vol. 12 of the Bird's Eyes' series. Subtitled 'BIRD IN 1950- Diplomat Hotel, N.Y.C./136th Street Session). That session was also published as 'The Apartment Sessions' by Spotlite in vinyl days!

There are certainly some worthwhile items in the Philology Bird collection. I only have a few Philologies because I have quite a bit of their material on LP. One that I do recommend is Philology W.80.2, Bird's Eyes Vol. 8. It features several cuts of Bird playing with Kenton's band in early 1954. It also contains a recording of Paul Desmond interviewing Bird on a radio program.

The Philology series is hit or miss, especially in the area of sound quality (that usually doesn't bother me when it comes to Bird, but some of the things I've heard are next to unlistenable), but there's some great music and some fascinating oddities to be found. (I include the Desmond interview among the latter).

The last two commercial volumes of Bird's Eyes (24 and 25) were really superb.  They reissued the Open Door material for the first time.  (I believe that another company has now followed in their footsteps.) There is some absolutely incredible Bird on those discs, so incredible that I had to rethink the idea that Bird may have lost a step by 1953.  The discs are filled out with really fine broadcasts of Cootie Williams with Bud Powell and Cleanhead Vinson.

I recently went through the entire 25 volume series, looking to copy the tracks that were the best combination of performance and sound quality to my ipod.

There's a pretty large percentage of the series that has sound quality below what I personally can bear to listen to.

The four volumes that I copied the most music from were volumes 8, 15, and 17, and 18.

Volume 8 includes three tracks with the Stan Kenton orchestra that I found appealing.

Volume 15 has the Red Norvo Comet recordings with Bird and Dizzy.

Voume 17 has Barry Ulanov's Metronome All Stars with various configuations, including Dizzy or Fats Navarro and Lennie Tristano.

Volume 18 is a worthy acquisition for the transciption performance with Willie Smith and Benny Carter.

Looking at what's on the Bird's Eyes Philology list of volumes 26 thru 56, here are some of the previously unissued items I found. Accuracy not guaranted.

- Volume 26 includes quite a number of items from Bob Redcross which have not seen the light of the day so far from the February 1943 private session plus tracks recorded by the Pete King quartet with King playing the Charlie Parker white plastic saxophone that was auctioned by Christie's of London in September 1994. Christie's had a beautiful catalogue from that auction of the Chan Parker collection,

- volume 27 seems to include additional material from the concerts Bird played with the Woody Herman band in Kansas City in 1951,

- volume 28 has a trio of additional sides (with Dizzy Gillespie) from the November 14, 1952 afternoon concert at Carnegie Hall,

- volume 29 has several unissued sides from the JATP February 11, 1949 concert at Carnegie Hall,

- volume 36 has sides with Allen Eager recorded at photographer Milton Green's studio which look like those that were included in the Uptown CD 'Allen Eager In The Land of Oo-Blaa-Dee',

- volume 37 has 3 more tracks from the JATP February 11, 1949 Carnegie Hall concert, plus one 1953 'Dance of the Infidels' with Bud, Mingus and Roach that looks new (but is it?),

- volume 48 has the 1953 Massey Hall concert from the original tape (without overdub by Mingus),

- volume 49 has 3 tracks from the JATP February 11, 1949 concert,

- volume 56 has more unissued items from the Autumn 1943 private recording session at Vic Damon studio.

The rest has appeared elsewhere including on other Philology Bird's Eyes issues.

The full broadcast of the Barry Ulanov broadcast with Navarro, Parker, Tristano et al is in the Philology 'Bird's Eyes' CD volume 17. That one may be more difficult to get but worth the search. It also has two other Ulanov 1947 reunions with Dizzy, Bird and Tristano, and various other Bird treasures.

Thanks a lot, kh1958 !!! :)

Don't think volumes 24 and 25 which have the 1953 Open Door sets (with Bennie Harris, Bud Powell, Al Haig, Mingus and Art Taylor) have appeared anywhere else yet.

And this one?:

Charlie Parker at the Open Door (2CD) TKO/Magnum/Ember

Benny Harris on trumpet, Al Haig and Bud Powell on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and Art Taylor on drums.

Recorded live at the Open Door, New York, 26th July 1953.

Tracks

1 Out of Nowhere Green, Heyman 3:04 2 Star Eyes DePaul, Raye 3:55 3 Cool Blues Parker 4:44 4 East of the Sun (And West of the Moon) Bowman 3:26 5 The Song Is You Hammerstein, Kern 6:02 6 My Little Suede Shoes Parker 2:15 7 52nd Street Theme Monk 2:36 8 Ornithology Harris, Parker 3:17 9 Scrapple from the Apple Parker 3:25 10 I Cover the Waterfront Green, Heyman 2:26 11 This Time the Dream's on Me Arlen, Mercer 4:14 12 I'll Remember April DePaul, Johnston, Raye 4:13 13 My Old Flame Coslow, Johnston 4:18 14 52nd Street Theme Monk 2:59 15 I Remember You Mercer, Schertzinger 3:01 16 All the Things You Are Hammerstein, Kern 4:14 17 Hot House Dameron 3:17 18 Just You, Just Me Greer, Klages 2:02 19 I'll Remember April DePaul, Johnston, Raye 2:36 20 52nd Street Theme Monk :35

No idea of release date, though. Maybe the Philologies came first.

The two Philology CDs have four sets from the Open Door date. Same 19 tunes in a slightly different order. No release date on the Philology but I am sure they were released before the Embers.

The Philologies have notes by Robert Bergman, a co-author of the Charlie Parker Discography that Cadence published.

To add to what I wrote back when, Bird's Eyes Vol 8 also contains a session from April, 1951 with some truly inspired Bird (I should say more inspired than usual) and Roy Haynes (the Philology notes credit him and the Bregman/Bukowski/Saks discography says it's probably he) on fire. (The mic seems to have been placed near the drum set which adds to that feeling.)

And just an added thought - I've always found that Bird's alto somehow manages to be heard and to ring clearly through on even the murkiest, muddiest bootlegs. Pretty amazing to me, and it speaks volumes about Bird's sound.
