1 album - 1 artist --> AS A SIDEMAN

OK, this thread is similar to the other "1 album - 1 artist, the essentials thread" thread.

EXCEPT, you only get to pick one example (one album) per artist, where that artist is serving as a sideman.

What are THE very best sideman dates for each artist???

This should generate interest in terms of sidemen who never lead dates (particularly drummers and/or bass players whose best recordings are not their own dates, or else they didn't lead any/many dates). And also some interesting choices for players who did lots and LOTS of sideman dates, in addition to the dates they lead themselves.

Also, since the specific sideman of the date that you're choosing it for isn't self-evident by just posting album covers -- be sure to mention the specific sideman for whom your choice applies.

PS: Just like the other thread, double albums are o.k. but NO box sets, mosaics etc.!

Ron Carter on Miles Smiles, or anyone on Miles Smiles for that matter!

George Coleman on err......either My Funny Valentine or House Party where he's on alto. Help me decide that one.

Mal Waldron on Dolphy's first Five Spot disc; even with that piano he kills me on 'Bee Vamp'.

I'm going to go against the grain and say that Hank Jones makes Somethin' Else what it is.

Interesting thought! And indeed, it may be true, I think! I mean, the others were regulars of some sort, while Hank Jones was a bit odd man out, no?

Woody Shaw on Hank Mobley's "Thinking of Home" (just got it, Woody blew me away!)

Art Blakey on that Grant Green date with Sonny Clark (mainly because of "It Ain't Necessarily So")

Barney Wilen on Sacha Distel/John Lewis' "Afternoon in Paris"

Herbie Hancock on "Miles Smiles"

Barney Wilen on Sacha Distel/John Lewis' "Afternoon in Paris"

how about giving the Wilen credit to the Gil Cuppini album?

I thought so, but he's smoking on the Lewis/Distel - a close call, though!

some others:

J.R. Monterose on René Thomas' "Guitar Groove"

Bill Evans on Mingus' "East Coasting"

Clarence Shaw on Mingus' "Tijuana Moods"

Doug Watkins (tough call!) maybe on "Introducing Lee Morgan"

John La Porta on "Mobley's Message"? (don't know that many of his appearances, but there he kills!)
