Bright Moments
did john coltrane & ornette coleman ever play together? is this the next great "find"?!!!!
brownie
They did. When Ornette Coleman played with his group at the Five Spot in the early '60s, Coltrane was a frequent visitor. Ornette Coleman is reported to have tapes of several of these jams. Ornette Coleman also played at Coltrane's funeral. Coltrane wanted to have Coleman and Albert Ayler play at his funeral! ep1str0phy
Ornette sat in with John Coltrane at the Half Note, albeit on trumpet. I recall hearing of a (recorded) Trane date with Ornette on violin, although I may be thinking of the above. Coleman does have some personal tapes with Albert Ayler on them--again, sticking to trumpet (admittedly, I'd be psyched to hear Ornette's brass up 'gainst that classic Ayler wail). More to the matter at hand, Coltrane did (sort of) study with Coleman in the early 60's; I'm sure Coleman has some tapes of those personal meetings/jams (alongside the never-will-see-the-light-of-day Joujouka sides and those "original" quartet cuts from the late-70's).
