Slugs was amazing - I saw Mingus and Ornette there, around 1969 or 1970. I found out later that Jean Genet was in attendance at a lot of the Mingus performances, but in those days I didn't know of him -

I used to play around the corner from Slugs. Like 30 years later....

Where can I pick up tickets?? ^_^

No tix necessary. Just walk in, sit down at a table or at the bar and pay the cover and your bill when you left. I didn't get to Slugs until 1970 but saw a few great acts there: Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, and of course, Lee Morgan (including his final performance).

MartyJazz: for those of us who didnt expierence slugs, can you tell us about it a little more. i heard that it was miles and miles away from any of the main neighboorhoods, and in order to reach it you had to go into a pretty much ABANDONED neighborhood-- can you recall any more about slugs?

oh, and one more thought about slugs:

slugs does come off as being the "mintons" for the blue note scene-- all the posters/flyers ive seen are all blue note guys. was this really considered 'their' place at the time?

When I visited New York in the mid-sixties, I went to Slug's pretty often. Great place to hang and listen to incredible music.

I heard Jackie McLean, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra (on Monday evenings the first time around, then a full week the second time around)perform there. Also heard Charles Lloyd - did not care much for him - with a quartet that had Herbie Hancock, Henry Grimes, Pete LaRoca :)

The neighborhood was very colorful but pretty safe around then. I know this did not last very long!

in 1969 and 1970 the neighborhood was full of Hell's Angels - and pretty dangerous, actually, as I recall. In those pre-gentrified days the East Village was deserted and creepy - not safe at all -

the other thing I recall is Mingus's son standing at the bar showing someone one of his paintings. Of all the great things I saw there (probably 1970) the most amazing was Ornette with Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden. We were absolutely knocked out by the music though we didn't quite understand it. Haden very kindly came over to us between sets and bascially explained how he played with Ornette. Amazing night -

look at this one: how all the saxophonists are in the corners, and every monday...in the middle of this psychedelic trip of a poster, holding everything else together...sun ra.

.

Wow! Thanks!

I wish I could have caught that when I was 9 or 10. :)
