The Magnificent Goldberg
There are a dozen really significant Soul Jazz organists: Wild Bill Davis; Charles Earland; Richard “Groove” Holmes; Jack McDuff; Jimmy McGriff; Don Patterson; John Patton; Shirley Scott; Jimmy Smith; Johnny “Hammond” Smith; Lonnie Smith; and Larry Young. But there are so many other great organists, whose work I can never listen to enough. So Who are your favourite organists who aren't on this list? Mine are Lou Bennett Paul Bryant Milt Buckner Gloria Coleman Jackie Ivory Charles Kynard Billy Larkin Sam Lazar Bu Pleasant Freddie Roach Leon Spencer Jr Baby Face Willette Carl Wilson Reuben Wilson MG
Hardbopjazz
I really enjoy Charles Kynard playing. I would have to choose him from the list.

Jim Alfredson
Hey, I'm not minor league! I'm CRAZY LARGE! Ok not really, but I appreciate the props. One of my favorite unsung Hammond guys is Billy Gardner.
Free For All
Jim Alfredson. I have to check out some of those other people on that list. Yes, and he plays in major keys as well. What about Barbara Dennerlein? Hank Marr?

Actually, I don't. I just transpose my scales until my minor runs are in a major key. For instance, playing a tune in F major? I just solo in Am. I'm a frickin' genius. Free For All
minor runs I just had a bout with these the other day. But that's another story.

WD45
The Burner OOPS, he is on the list. I will go with Baby Face. Raw and reckless.
mikeweil
Melvin Rhyne, although I would put him in the top ten. He's certainly underrated. Rhoda Scott - she's great. Mike LeDonne Sam Yahel Larry Goldings Dan Wall Eddy Louiss Jeff Palmer Webster Lewis There was one Clarence Palmer on George Benson's CTI album, Beyond the Blue Horizon, I liked him very, very much! We might as well list all jazz organists ..... Edited January 26, 2006 by mikeweil
Sundog
Not minor in my book, but Chris Foreman should be better known.

Clarence Palmer also played electric piano on Grant Green's "Carryin' on" and organ on the title track of Fats Theus' "Black out", which also featured GG. He's pretty good.
