I'll even up the ante a little bit by saying this - America is no longer the cultural center of the popular music world. There's a whole generation, a global generation, who doesn't give a phlying phuck about our baggage and how it continues to circle around itself (although they dig the shit out of some of it's more serendipitous results). They're moving on, and we are going to be left in their dust.

To use but one example - I'd venture to say that Bob Marley as a musical figure, never mind cultural icon, is far more revered amongst the global African population that are James Brown & Aretha combined. Far more, not even close.

America, can you see the tailights? Look quick, they'll soon be out of range.

I think that's been true of Marley for 25+ years now, that's not new. He's probably more revered in the global non-African population as well.

Agreed. But that's still going to come as quite a shock to a large portion of the American music-loving/liking community.

Club/trance I suppose, whatever you'd like to call it.

edit - I realize there are elements of other things in there, in the samples I've heard.

Well, is samples is all you've heard, then I understand. Just know that her body of work as a whole is pretty much "all over the map" stylistically, sometimes from album to album, and sometimes within albums, and even songs. "Boundaries" of styles are one thing she seems to not be too impressed with!

I'm not discarding her, she just hasn't blown me away yet. I own "Routes" and have the Rodcast (I have ethical issues that I even have the rodcast on cdr, but that's another topic of discussion). But none of it has jumped out at me. It's probably a "different strokes" deal more than anything.

Monday's certainly got the background to come by this attitude naturally - Japanese/Italian parentage, Anglo step-father, totally jazz-surrounded household, a childhood split between the US & Japan, and by all accounts, quite the club (i.e. Black/Urban Dance Music) kid for quite a while.

Just my opinion, and I'm certainly not expecting a unanimous round of applause from the house for it. :g But there it is anyway.

well, i, for at least one, will give you a round of applause, fwiw! i like what you've said and agree.

just a "trivia question" though: monday's step-father is jewish. that wouldn't be termed "anglo," would it?

also, from what i remember, monday was born in japan but came to the states as a baby. i don't think she returned to japan to live until she was maybe in her 20's.

I didn't know that about Tabackin (and don't really care, if you know what I mean, but duly noted for the sake of accuracy).

I thought that I had read in several places where Monday & Toshiko went back & forth between America & Japan after Toshiko & Mariano split up because Toshiko had work there, and as a single mom she took both it and Monday. But I could be wrong about that.

Yeah, that's not at all a "simple" song. And Monday's poetry has a flavor of its own, not unlike her music. Her work w/Mondo Grosso is something I've not yet explored due to difficulty in finding it (and the expense of what I have found), but I'm doing research & budgeting. A new kind of R&B...

As for the dolls and stuff, I'm thinking/hoping that the music was added after the fact.

Jim--am I to infer this is a Monday Michiru song? If so, I want to get some stuff. Is this one available?

"No comment" on the softcore doll porn, but this is a pretty interesting song used for accompaniment:

Monday w/Mondo Grosso is all I can gather. No credits given on the youtube site beyond that. But it sounds like Monday's music, and definitely her words. Let me do some asking around, and I'll get back with you.

She's a beautiful woman, no doubt about that, but it's her music that hits me where I live. Plenty of beautiful women in the world, far fewer beautiful spirits, and even less beautiful music full of beautiful spirit.

Appreciate the bounty, but cherish that which is scarce, for that's where the true treasure lies.

Ok - the song is "Star Suite III", and it's from the Mondo Grosso album MG4.

And as I suspected, the cat who did the doll video is in no way connected w/the music.

You know what.

Yeah, that's an incredibly sexy video, but it's not the sleazy sexuality of a ho' trying to get your money by workin' dat laffy taffy. It's the honest beauty of a woman who has a truly beautiful spirit and lets it show.

It's a sign of these wrong times that appreciating feminine beauty and sensuality is automatically assumed to be a sign of lustful horny desires. Any man (or woman) who can't differentiate between the two has some growing to do.

Yes, it is a beautiful thing. Monday is my hero. She's gorgeous, vibrant, full of life and creative energy and then some. And she's over 40.

As she says on her myspace page, she is " a nice ripe age" but feels she is "still an egg just getting ready to hatch."

Couldn't say it better for myself... :)
