jazzbo
I ordered this. . . I have no James Brown of this vintage and this is likely a really good series . . . . Also ordered a four cd set of Tom Jones for my wife. . . 20 bucks. And if you're a Peggy Lee fan, check out the "Classics & Collectibles" imported two cd set they're selling for 10 bucks! This is a really nice set with some rareties inside including duets with Jim Backus. . . and Jimmy Rowles.

The Magnificent Goldberg
I seem to have about half of these trax. But it's a limited edition. Owwww! MG
Harold_Z
Yeah. I know. I have quite a few of the early (King) lps and a lot of these tracks are on them. I really should check...maybe ALL of them are on those lps.
HWright
Yeah. I know. I have quite a few of the early (King) lps and a lot of these tracks are on them. I really should check...maybe ALL of them are on those lps. I agree. This is frustrating. I'm always in favor of more JB product, but taking into account the complicated nature of JB's catalogue and all the previous reissues/collections, I think I would prefer to see a complete box set of JB's work at Federal/King. Here is my data on this period of JB's work: King/Federal Years Single =X Please, Please, Please 1959 Please, Please, Please b/w Why Do You Do Me X Try Me b/w Tell Me What Did I Do Wrong X I Feel That Old Feelin' Comin' On That's When I Lost My Heart Chonnie-On-Chon b/w I Won't Plead No More X Hold My Baby's Hand Tell Me What I Did Wrong Baby Cries Over the Ocean Begging, Begging b/w That When I Lost My Heart X No, No, No, No b/w Hold My Baby's Hand X That Dood It b/w Baby Cries Over the Ocean X I Don't Know b/w I Feel That Old Feelin' Comin' On X I Walked Alone Love or a Game b/w Messing with the Blues X Let's Make It Just Won't Do Right Try Me 1959 There Must be a Reason I Want You So Bad b/w There Must be a Reason X Why Do You Do Me X Got to Cry b/w It was You X Strange Things Happen Fine Old Foxy Self Messing with the Blues Try Me It Was You I've Got to Change b/w It Hurts to Tell You X Can't Be the Same b/w Gonna Try X It Hurts to Tell You I Won't Plead No More You're Mine, You're Mine b/w I Walked Alone X Gonna Try Don't Let it Happen to Me Non-LP Single 1959 Doodle Bug (instr) b/w Bucket Head X Think 1960 Think b/w You've Got the Power X Good Good Lovin' b/w Don't Let it Happen to Me X Wonder When You're Comin' Home I'll Go Crazy b/w I Know It's True (I Found Someone) X This Old Heart b/w Wonder When You're Coming Home X I Know It's True ( I Found Someone) Bewildered b/w If You Want Me X I'll Never, Never Let You Go You've Got The Power If You Want Me Baby, You're Right b/w I'll Never Never Let You Go X So Long Non-LP Single 1960 The Bells b/w And I Do Just What I Want X Edited September 19, 2006 by HWright
WD45
With the past history of these things, you should buy two on speculation and one to listen to!
Harold_Z
So there are just 4 tracks that weren't on the lps then? Still, I find this hard to resist. The sound will probably be great. PLUS session info. Non existent on the King lps.

HolyStitt
Yes, I did. Very nicely done. Thank you for responding. Did you hear any significant sound improvement over previous issues of the material?
jazzbo
My previous versions of this material are on scratched party lp and cassettes. . . . So. .. YES.
John L
This is a bit frustrating, as it looks like the previous Roots of a Revolution set, but with the hits added. (Roots of a Revolution covered only the non-hits, as they apparently didn't want competition with the Greatest Hits collections. ) At any rate, I have programmed the hits in through iTunes. So I would only bite if there was a MAJOR sonic upgrade here. Speaking of Hip-0-Select, is anybody familiar with the post-Motown David Ruffin albums that are now available? Stefan Wood
I used to have the Roots of a Revolution set, and I consider this to be a sonic upgrade. Better liner notes as well.

John L
Speaking of Hip-0-Select, is anybody familiar with the post-Motown David Ruffin albums that are now available? Are you asking about the titles on the Hip-0-Select site? Actually, I misunderstood. These are Motown albums. I meant David Ruffin volume 2. I absolutely adore the track "Walk Away From Love." But I wonder how the rest of the Van McCoy stuff holds up with Ruffin. I have Ruffin volume 1, and like that. BruceH
Since I've still got Roots Of A Revolution, I can't see my way clear to getting this new set.

billyboy
Amazon offers MP3 downloads of this series, even the out of print ones, for about $14. For some reason, volume 9 is only $3.99! You miss out on the liners, but if you want the music, There It Is!

king ubu
I'm hooked by this series... got Vols. 3, 4 and 6 now, waiting for Vols. 1, 5, and 7-9 to be delivered in the next days/weeks. Amazon.com still has Vols. 1 and 5, but Vol. 2 is way over the top right now... anyone has a lead where I might find that one?
