For some reason I'd never really considered this set at all, not on the radar so to speak, I saw Jan Hammer's name too often and could only think of Miami Vice, ugh... ....

it.

I had the same reservations. When I see Hammer's name with el p next to it, I get a little nervous. :g

Oh come on, you should be thinking Mahavishnu and even when he's playing with Elvin, it should be a plus.

Jan Hammer's playing on the Elvin dates is very good. He certainly had jazz chops. One track has him and Chick Corea trading fours (or eights, can't remember right now) on Rhodes. Sometimes he could sound a bit "dry" - like a more chopsy/abstract version of Corea, if that could be imagined - but this is nothing like 'Miami Vice Theme' at all.

One listen to Elvin Jones Is On The Mountain on PM Records with jan Hammer and Gene Perla should wipe away any doubts about Hammer's jazz chops - that album is a very important complement to the Elvin Mosaic - Liebman also mentions it in his liner notes. If that one was on Blue Note, y'all would have it.

Yep, that one is a favourite of mine too. Will dig it out today.

gene perla is an awesome bassist! he and don alias are one of the tightest rhythm sectiond around, IMO.

those two steve grossman discs with them and hammer are really great.

and "on the mountain" is also really great.

all these albums are available via PM records now, i think. all highly recommended.

hammer was a very nice electric and acoustic player around this time period-

horacee arnold's "tales of the exonerated flea" is also a classic early sort of fusion jam from around this time which many of you would like-it has hammer, abercrombie, towner, fortune, laird on it among others.

oh but why did i enter this thread even though i don't own any mosaics?

to let you people know on "the site" someone just seeded an elvin jones show from 1971-2 discs and it looks great (not the blue note official release, of course). this has hammer, perla, farrell i don't know who else.

speaking of elvin and farrell-"outback" is also an awesome album.

that would be a great mosaic-the complete CTI works of joe farrell.

hammer's duo stuff with daniel earle johnson is good in a bad way also, from a few years later.

has anyone heard this stuff? now available on CD too.

Have 'em all, dig 'em to death. They rock! Hammer was a great drummer, too - brought together the best of Elvin, Tony Williams, and Don Alias.

The Jeremy Steigs with Perla, Alias, and Hammer belong here, too - nice funky groove with jazzy looseness.

yes the steig albums are excellent.

i was going to mention-yeah, hammer was a good drummer too. definitely.

only thing around this time i don't like is the goodman/hammer duo.

Original sessions produced by Duke Pearson (A-B), Francis Wolff (C-F), George Butler (G-J) and Omar Clay (K-M)

Remix supervision: Matt Pierson and David Liebman (J) and Bob Belden (K-M)

Produced for release by Michael Cuscuna

Executive producer: Charlie Lourie

Recording engineer: Rudy Van Gelder (A-I), Dino Lappas (J) and Don Hahn (K-M)

Remix engineers: Rudy Van Gelder (G-I), Malcolm Addey (J) and Peter Doell (K-M)

Mastered using 24-bit analog-to-digital resolution by Ron McMaster, except session J mastered from 16-bit digital mixes.

Masters appear courtesy of Blue Note Records, a division of Capitol Records, Inc.

Producer's note:

Because much of the material used in this set consists of single sessions that produced entire LPs, we've decided, where possible, to retain the original album sequence within a session rather than present it in recorded order of performance. The studios sessions are presented in chronological order, followed by the live Lighthouse session, which occupies the two final discs.

For the sake of repeated listenability, the already lengthy Discs Seven and Eight do not include the stage announcements or the audience singing "Happy Birthday" to Elvin Jones, which appeared on the original double LP issue. The out-of-phase sound on the drums on "Simone" (Disc Four, track three) is on the only surviving tape of this performance. The peak clipping of the bass drum at two points on "For All The Other Times" (Disc Four, track five) is in the original recording.

Note: The Verve master numbers indicate that this session was recorded in December 1961 and this is confirmed by the Verve recording log. The original album states December 1962 and while this might be a bit of record label falsification (common at the time) to suit the album title Gerry Mulligan ‘63, Bill Crow’s work diary seems to substantiate that date. ________________________________________________________________________
