recently spend a good time watching this heid documentary "that dirty thang" on youtube... nice recollections of playing hotel gigs in shanghai (and clips from those) plus memories of stitt/patterson/james...

three parts:

another nice heid video in two parts

only have one of his albums, "da girl" and like it a lot, great frontline of joe magnarelli and scott petersen...

interesting how often they mention mccoy tyner...

btw in september heid was in hongkong

which of course doesn't mean anything...

his brother's webpage with a phone number - maybe a good person to ask about his brother's whereabouts (not that i'd know where my brother is at this point in time)

I wanted to bring this thread back up for those who don't know, as well as for those of us that need reminding, that Bill Heid is one of the best organ players to have ever played the instrument.

Every time I play one of his recordings, I'm reminded of how he can reach your mind with his inventiveness, your heart with his beautiful ballads, and your gut with his soul!

Like Jim said, more people need to know about Heid. Maybe we should set up a ministry or something:

"Excuse me sir, have you accepted Bill Heid as your personal savior of soul organ?" :)

And for members of the NRA, we could show them:

He's back from China; I saw him at Westminster a few weeks ago. He usually plays once a week (Tuesday?) at Utopia on U street.

Bertrand.

so it is him playing there. I went there last year on a Tuesday after calling to make sure he was there and he wasn't. I'll have to check this gig out again.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier to save you a trip, but I think he's back in China.

It's starting to tick me off, because now he's taking his sidemen with him.

If you are near Utopia tonight, I highly recommend the Sarah Hughes quintet playing Mulligan/Konitz music. I won't be able to come due to early meetings tomorrow, but I highly recomend it. Last week's Ornette Coleman retrospective with 2 altos, tenor bass and drums was brilliant.

Bertrand.

So yesterday morning on my way out the door, I grabbed a random CD from the rack. It turned out to be Heid's "Wet Streets" on Savant. What a fantastic CD! This sucker cooks. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a disc from front to back like I did this one. Great playing all around.

Listening to this got me thinking about this thread and how I always meant to pick up Heid's "Dark Shadows" and "This Is My Rifle". Well, "Dark Shadows" is now ordered ($4.50 from Amazon) and I am in the hunt for "This is My Rifle".

I used to have his recording Dark Secrets---with a very funny picture of him holding a purported CIA ID up outside their HQ. Joe Magnarelli is on it, and the tunes and playing are very nice. I also heard him at Trumpet's with the late Jimmy Ponder sometime ago. I think we even jammed once, at the old Augie's...
