Bill Heid plays a weekly gig at a club in DC. Of course, the one time I went he canceled even though I was told on the phone he would play :rmad: . I will have to give it another attempt.

anybody have contact info for this guy? Just picked up on this thread -

by the way, by way of nothing, really, that old stuff about Purdie playing on Beatle records has pretty well been showed to be false -

I thought that it was shown to have been overdubbing for the first American release of the Tony Sheridan stuff , but nothing more. No?

recently spend a good time watching this heid documentary "that dirty thang" on youtube... nice recollections of playing hotel gigs in shanghai (and clips from those) plus memories of stitt/patterson/james...

three parts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7je5D4NWGI8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1dZ4ly5vnM

another nice heid video in two parts

only have one of his albums, "da girl" and like it a lot, great frontline of joe magnarelli and scott petersen...

interesting how often they mention mccoy tyner...

btw in september heid was in hongkong

which of course doesn't mean anything...

his brother's webpage with a phone number - maybe a good person to ask about his brother's whereabouts (not that i'd know where my brother is at this point in time)

Bill Heid is "One Of A Kind".. I played with him for the first time in Lansing in the late 70's with Jackson Michigan tenor legend Benny Poole.. He blew me away! I had all I could do to keep up!

I wanted to bring this thread back up for those who don't know, as well as for those of us that need reminding, that Bill Heid is one of the best organ players to have ever played the instrument.

Every time I play one of his recordings, I'm reminded of how he can reach your mind with his inventiveness, your heart with his beautiful ballads, and your gut with his soul!

Like Jim said, more people need to know about Heid. Maybe we should set up a ministry or something:

"Excuse me sir, have you accepted Bill Heid as your personal savior of soul organ?" :)

And for members of the NRA, we could show them:

I just heard his latest, Wiley Ave. Great stuff! I still can't figure out why he isn't more well known.

He's back from China; I saw him at Westminster a few weeks ago. He usually plays once a week (Tuesday?) at Utopia on U street.

so it is him playing there. I went there last year on a Tuesday after calling to make sure he was there and he wasn't. I'll have to check this gig out again.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier to save you a trip, but I think he's back in China.

It's starting to tick me off, because now he's taking his sidemen with him.

If you are near Utopia tonight, I highly recommend the Sarah Hughes quintet playing Mulligan/Konitz music. I won't be able to come due to early meetings tomorrow, but I highly recomend it. Last week's Ornette Coleman retrospective with 2 altos, tenor bass and drums was brilliant.

Bertrand.

So yesterday morning on my way out the door, I grabbed a random CD from the rack. It turned out to be Heid's "Wet Streets" on Savant. What a fantastic CD! This sucker cooks. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a disc from front to back like I did this one. Great playing all around.

Listening to this got me thinking about this thread and how I always meant to pick up Heid's "Dark Shadows" and "This Is My Rifle". Well, "Dark Shadows" is now ordered ($4.50 from Amazon) and I am in the hunt for "This is My Rifle".

I used to have his recording Dark Secrets---with a very funny picture of him holding a purported CIA ID up outside their HQ. Joe Magnarelli is on it, and the tunes and playing are very nice. I also heard him at Trumpet's with the late Jimmy Ponder sometime ago. I think we even jammed once, at the old Augie's...

I spun Heid's "Dark Secrets" yesterday and I have to say, I like "Wet Streets" much more. Don't get me wrong, "Dark Secrets" is a very good date, but it didn't get me moving like "Wet Streets" did.

Do you have 'Bop Rascal' Kevin? That's one of my favorites.

BTW, I produced an album for Bill that we recorded earlier in the spring. We're looking at an early 2017 release.

Bill's an engaging gentleman. We enjoyed seeing him this past NYE and I look forward to Jim's recording.

I'm trying to see if I can get Scullers Jazz Club in Boston to bring Heid in for a gig. I don't know if he's ever played Boston, but if he did, it was either a long long time ago or at some venue far off the beaten path.

Glad to hear about the new recording coming out this year and his affiliation with Jim. I am a great admirer of Mr. Heid's work.
