Rooster_Ties
Super 8 footage with sound: Jazz_Fest_Nice_1978_telecine_by_JeMo_ Looks like there were legit cameras there too, so there may be pro-shot footage of some of this floating about somewhere. Can anyone name the trumpeter at the beginning, and then the two trumpeters in the cutting contest a couple minutes in, and the tenor soloist shortly after that?? I can't, but I'm currious about who they might be. Thanks!! Edited September 25, 2006 by Rooster_Ties
jay2b2
Joe Newman and Cat Anderson are the dueling trumpeters. Arnett Cobb on tenor. Looks like a Lionel Hampton all-star band.
marcello
Could that be Kenny Burrell and Charles McPhearson? Pepper Adams on baritone, for sure. Kai Winding on trombone. Chuck Nessa
I do remember seeing McPherson and Adams when I watched. Don't have time to watch again but the personnel of this concert must have been the basis of the tour: 50th Anniversary Concert/Live at Carnegie Hall - Newport Jazz Festival, July 1, 1978 Cat Anderson, Doc Cheatham (tp) Jimmy Maxwell, JoeNewman (tp,flhrn) Eddie Bert, John Gordon, Benny Powell (tb) Charles McPherson (as) EarL Warren (as,cl,fl) Arnett Cobb, Paul Moen (ts) Pepper Adams (bar) Lionel Hampton (vib,p,d, vcl) Ray Bryant (p) Billy Mackel (g) Chubby Jackson (b) Panama Francis (d) This was issued on Timeless and a few other labels. Spontooneous
Trumpeter at the beginning kinda looks like Louis Smith to me. That might indeed be Kenny Burrell sitting in with the Hampton band toward the end. But I thought I caught a glimpse of Billy Mackel earlier. (Billy was a southpaw.)
