Clarke-Boland Big Band

Late

Recommended Posts

I would love to see some company put out a box set of CBBB. I have in my possession several of the videos of this band (my true intro into how great this band was) and I would welcome a well organized audio companion with detailed liner notes. Is there any jazz writer/journalist with the knowledge to write detailed, informative liner notes for a box set of CBBB?

Thanks,

Marla

Perhaps I was in error, Mike. It is mentioned here:

http://www.musicweb-international.com/ency...edia/c/C148.HTM

and I also thought I remembered this from the shorter version of Frohne's discography which used to be available on the Internet (before the book was published, I suppose). But I was confused by some catalog numbers I had written down; do both Emanon 17039 and 17040 refer to the same "Historically Speaking" set?

hmm .... here's the quote from the page you linked:

Clarke/Boland CD reissues finally began with limited edition two-CD sets on an Emanon label at extremely high prices, presumably with some of the money going to charity: Historically Speaking '94, Blowing The Cobwebs Out '95, The Power Of Positive Swinging '96 each reissued several albums complete.

I doubt that the writer of these lines ever saw or heard those sets.

Historically Speaking had only excerpts from three LPs, the remainder was previously unissued material.

Blowing The Cobwebs Out hade four complete LPs, however.

The Power Of Positive Swinging: never heard of this before. Maybe Campi had planned it, but I never saw a trace of this, and shortly afterwards the Verve/MPS reissues started.

And yes, 17039 and 17040 refer to the two discs of the same two CD set!

here's the discographical date for the live material I am aware of - some of it is studio dates (mostly at the beginning of this listing), which may or may not have seen (partial) release on any of the CDs I don't have...

This is in no way, I assume, a complete listing, nor is it free of mistakes, I assume...

At the end, the sextet/small group sessions I'm aware of are listed, too.

The second half of the Jazz Icons DVD featuring Dizzy features him doing a set with the band in 1970 in Belgium. They sound very tight and well-rehearsed (I think they had been on tour w/Diz). What a great band!

And some timely 1970 fashion as well. :)

I recently had the Jazz Icons box set, and I have been greatly deighted too discovering that video footage... A real "new" gem. Dizzy seemed to enjoy plaiyng with the Clarke/Boland band pretty much.

In the past ten years I had all the CBBB cds I could find, the small combo being generally my favourite ones (like the awesome Rearward/Schema compilation "Sahib Shihab And All Those Cats", often confused with the baritonist's "Seeds" session but indeed much longer and different).

I'll be one of the very first to buy a forthcoming box set for sure.

Speaking of Rearward/Schema, has anyone been in contact with them via e-mail? I've tried to use the address on their site (info@ishtar.it) but the mails are bouncing back.

The reason I'm trying to reach them is that it seems impossible to order the Clarke-Boland album "Our Kinda Strauss" though it is still listed on the site; it just doesn't turn up in the shopping cart. A pity if this title is deleted...

The website is here.

I've heard that it is deleted (or they have run out of copies) - both CD and vinyl, I believe. :(

I've got it on vinyl. Bought a whole heap of them from Schema but unfortunately they were unable to supply the Sahib Shihab as it had already run out. Subsequently they did a second pressing of the Shihab but I missed it, unfortunately.

I must say that they did a marvellous job with the pressing quality and packaging on those LPs.

Oh, no....

And that one seems to be something people are holding on to (quite understandably). Not many used copies around.

Daniel,

I may have a spare copy of the Our Kinda Strauss CD (I think I have the Shihab too, if anyone is interested). Please hold on a couple of weeks; I'll let you know as soon as I get back home.

I'm interested in both, but don't tell sidewinder! :)

Many thanks for checking this out for me! Let me know if you want any help with Swedish stuff some time.

How about a Mosaic Select of all that material recorded for use by European radio stations back in 1967 I think that is mentioned by Campi on the DVD? I think this stuff (or some of it) had a rare CD reissue on Gigi Campi's own imprint and would make a mega-great Select. :excited:

There were at least 20 studio albums, so a complete box would probably be too big to really sell. But I'd buy anything from this band! Still looking for many of the original albums, too...

Previous thread.

They could probably sqeeze them onto 10 CD's, which would be no worse than the Mildred Bailey set.

( ;) )

a squeeze box? a squealing one maybe?

I actually like the Bailey box *a lot* - but I'd still be in for a big, fat Clarke-Boland box! And if not that, than a smaller one... anything with rare music by this great band would be a treat!

In the first 7 or 8 seconds of "Volcano", the live at Ronnie Scott's session, there's a guy directly under the left channel audience mic shouting out something that I've never been able to completely decipher (it must be the Brit accent).

I think it's something like "...well, they don't sound like a bunch of fucking ?mongers? ...HAH HAH HAH...." It's just before the (off mic) emcee brings the band on. Has anyone else ever heard it, and figured out what he's saying? If you have that recording, take a listen and let me know, please...

(I try to hide the audience mics when I record live, always fearing that some jerk will screw up a take with just such a remark).

Just received Rearward vinyl editions of 'Our Kinda Strauss' and 'Off Limits' today -- from CD Universe, of all places. Was amazed that they were able to get them! Might be worth checking out if anyone is looking for them...

Also, ordered a vinyl copy of Sahib Shihab's '...And All Those Cats' from Dusty Groove yesterday. Shipped yesterday. Unfortunately, they're listing it as 'Temporarily Out Of Stock' today.

They have several other CBBB CDs listed as in stock, however -- 'Calypso Blues', 'More Smiles', 'Off Limits', 'November Girl'.... Better be quick!

Man -- that was fast. A few of those discs are now listed as Out Of Stock at DustyGroove...and the vinyl editions that I picked up from CDUniverse are nowhere to be seen on their site.

I did, however, spot this one over at DustyGroove -- newly listed as of today...

Sahib Shihab and the Danish Radio Jazz Group

Might be of some interest to some of you... ;)
