"Unreleased" Blue Note 70s Twofers on CD?

Teasing the Korean

I'm just curious how Blue Note has dealt with these in the digital age. I'm assuming they didn't simply copy the (ugly) 70s graphics. Did they make up titles and fresh cover art to make them look as though they were released on vinyl at the time of recording? Or is it haphazard, on a case by case basis?

what, you want more? :rolleyes:

actually, chuck's response is pretty accurate.

yes, they didn't simply copy the ugly 70s graphics.

yes, they made up new cover art reflecting the look of blue note album covers of the time.

and yes, the reissue of this series has been rather haphazard.

as to whether they were succesful in accomplishing these goals, i think that's a subjective question. why not take a look at the titles below, then do a google image search for the covers and judge for yourself.

a few observations

1 - to their credit, it looks like Blue Note eventually got just about everything in that series out on CD.

2 - Teasing the Korean got both the long and short of it from board members, and got a proper introduction to Chuck.

What titles of these (if any) have yet to see any kind of digital reissue?? Plenty are only on Mosaics (and not ever available as singles, or at least not as yet), but have any gone completely un-reissued in any digital form??

Thanks!!

Off the top of my head, I believe these have seen non-Mosaic small set or single CD release or have shown up as bonus cuts on individual CD's. I'm sure some of our board-mates sitting there with discographies and focused minds will have corrections, but here's a strawman to start:

* LT 987 Lee Morgan - Sonic Boom

* LT 988 Wayne Shorter - The Soothsayer

* LT 989 Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse

* LT 990 Grant Green - Solid

* LT 992 Jimmy Smith - Confirmation

Uh... I think that TTK was asking about the Twofers, not the single disc LT series...

Exactly what I was going to say. Do we need to start over (from where Chuck left off)? I don't remember the twofers that clearly anymore... 30 years is a long time. Anyway, most of the twofers I had included material that has since been pretty easy to find on CD... but I'm sure there were some others that were outside my area of interest that have remained somewhat difficult or scattered. The one that I think of (and still have, actually) is the Stanley Turrentine twofer (mega-close-up color photo, or "ugly colored dots" series ;)) with the Duke Pearson-arranged session that hasn't seen daylight since.

Oh, and once again, I'm not going to agree with the LT covers being referred to as "ugly". :cool:

Off the top of my head, the other Jackei McLean album on Jacknife (the one with Moncur) has never made it out on CD. I believe it's the only Blue Note J-Mac that's still missing on CD. The McCoy Tyner stuff on Cosmos will finally come out on the Mosaic Select if that really makes it out in January (the 70's Hutcherson Select is due at the same time). That's all I can think of right off.

The JMac session w/Moncur was on the Hipnosis two-fer & is currently available on the Moncur Select.

The "High Freqency" session is the one from the Jacknife two-fer that's not seen release outside of the McLean Mosaic.

So that's two from the two-fers that have not yet seen individual CD release.

Not ugly, but unimaginative in the sense that they were not really jazz related - a small photo insert of the leader would have been sufficient.

This has been discussed at length in at least two different threads (one quite recently), and I'll just say that I disagree with you. The eloquent one, Mr. Sangrey, has expressed it better than I could, but...

The photos themselves (by themselves) may not have had anything to do with jazz, but the images were, in many cases, clearly associated with the album title in their application. In some cases, the association required more of a stretch of the imagination (and may have failed for some, even trying to apply their imagination... hey, it's subjective). At any rate, a small photo insert of the leader against a large white background... that would have been a REAL disaster, imo.

Yes. Back in the day I'd picked up a number of twofers in the tan with orange type series; and orange/brown with top green banner series. (For all I know, this may have been the same series with a packaging change). Anyway, a number of these twofers were comrpised of 2 unreleased albums. The McCoy Tyner and Stanley Turrentine sets come to mind. Being that each set had 2 albums, but one title, I'm assuming that, say, the McCoy Tyner albums weren't subsequently released on CD as "Cosmos Vo. 1" and "Cosmos Vol. 2." And I know there are a lot of Blue Note experts around here who could answer the question in much less time than it would take me to enter each TRACK title into Google (being that I couldn't guess the CD titles). Hence my original question...

Ok, let's push the envelope of geekdom... :bad::g

According to BSN :

In the 1970s, United Artists had the UA-LA000 series, which by 1980 had put out over 1000 albums. Somewhere around 1060, the United Artists name was dropped and the series became Liberty. Many older titles still in print on United Artists were reissued on Liberty with the same numbers as the originals on United Artists, though often with new prefixes. Eventually, the 1000 series had a "5" added to the number. later these were reissued under the Liberty imprint. The Liberty label had undergone a complete reworking from the old black-and-rainbow versions of the 1960s. Now they were a trendy multi- shade grey, with the individual letters in the Liberty logo done in different colors from red to green. For convenience, we have started the series with LT-1000 in this discography.

Look at this listing of the Blue Note LT-series, and look a the gaps in the numbering sequence, some of which we can fill in w/non-BN titles, some of which also had a non-LT prefix:

At this point the "Series numbering changes to 51000 series". Reissues continue (most of it from the PJ catalog, some y'all might remember that series), but no vault material is released.

What we now need is to fill in the blanks for the latter 900 #s. BSN has no listings.

BTW - we got some listings here for the BNs that BSN lists as blank.

Also, if memory serves, the Ronnie Laws, etc. releases were by then on Liberty instead of BN. Apparently, the "New Note" wasn't getting hit any more...

What all this serves to point out to me is just how stealth this whole series must have been. I mean, Andrew hill in the middle of Fats Domino & Crystal Gayle? C'mon....

The McLean sessions have been noted above. I can get back with you on some of the others if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

Well, no, not exactly. I mean, not all were reissues of two complete LP's (nor was all of the material previously unreleased, but I know you didn't say that... just pointing it out). The Stanley Turrentine was not entirely comprised of previously unreleased material. The hard-to-get material I referred to (with Pearson arranging) was in fact previously unissued (and most has not been reissued since on LP or CD). The rest of the tracks on that twofer came from previously issued BN LP's ("Hustlin", "A Chip Off The Old Block", "The Look Of Love", and "Always Something There") and a few tracks were also issued on "New Time Shuffle". Similarly, I remember the Dexter Gordon twofer in the same series being a compilation of tracks from different sessions, most of which I believe had been released previously.

Jim, you're talking about the very first series of the 2-fers, the "dotty" ones. That was just one set of releases.

TTK's talking about the later "paper bag" series of 2-fers. There was a Turrnentine set in that series (although it had a glossy cover) - Jubilee Shouts, I believe it was called.

Well, the Turrentime was one of the last batch, IIRC, which had a blue frame, whereas the earlier ones had that paper bag look.

The ones I remember:

McCoy Tyner - Cosmos (part was on the Asante CD, all will be on the Mosaic Select)

Sam Rivers - Involution (the quartet session led by Andrew Hill was in his Mosaic, the other session was on a single CD and Rivers' Mosaic)

Andrew Hill - One For One (one half was in the Mosaic and was just reissued as Pax, the other is in the Mosaic Select)

Wasn't there a list somewhere or was thsi discussed here on on the old BNBB? I remember mopre twofers by Freddie Hubbard, Randy Weston, Stanley Turrentine, Jackie McLean ...
