sidewinder Posted November 26, 2006 Report Share Posted November 26, 2006 Just been watching these two films for the first time, issued by Rhapsody Films. Both of them are like time-capsules of the swing era still in its prime in a now almost-vanished NYC. They are both superb historical documents. 'After Hours' has the dream front line of Roy Eldridge and Coleman Hawkins, backed by Barry Galbraith, Jimmy Guarnieri, Milt Hinton and Cozy Cole. It recreates a 'typical' after-hours jam session set from 1961. Eldridge, in particular, is on fire and Hawk sounds his usual Imperious self ( ). 'Jazz Dance' is amazing cinema-verite from 1954, shot in the Central Park Dance Hall and has Pee Wee Russell, Jimmy McPartland and Willie 'The Lion' Smith amongst the participants. The atmosphere and frenetic dancing are very well captured in the film (which has revolutionary camera techniques for the time). This DVD highly recommended !
