vote for your Blue Note Desert Island Discs

felser

Recommended Posts

To do penance for my last Topic and to pay tribute to the Late, at one time Great Tower Records, we can do Blue Note Desert Island Discs. Here's the rules. You can vote one time. You can pick up to 10 Blue Note Albums (not artists) which you would want if you were stuck on a desert island and could only have 10 of them. Any multi-album sets count as the number of albums contained in the set. So the 4 CD Jackie McLean Mosaic, which contains six albums, would be a vote for each of those six albums and would take up six of your ten eligible slots. After the traffic dies down, I will tally up the votes and present the overall list of Blue Note Desert Island Discs. Then we can do the same with other labels. If no one else posts their lists, then my ten titles (when I post them) win!

Well, here's my working list -- which I may edit in the coming days -- in alpha order...

Don Cherry - Complete Communion

Joe Henderson - Mode For Joe -- nah, make that Inner Urge

Andrew Hill - Passing Ships

Andrew Hill - the last disc of the Hill BN Select (the one with Woody Shaw, Sam Rivers, etc...)

Hank Mobley - Third Season

Lee Morgan - Infinity

John Patton - Boogaloo

Sam Rivers - Fuscha Swing Song (or maybe Contours instead? )

Wayne Shorter - Etcetera

Larry Young - Mothership

I may regret a few of these choices (or, rather, a few things that I didn't pick), but that's certainly 10 solid dates that I could live with for quite a while. (And DAMN, this really is hard to limit this to just 10.)

Clifford Brown - Memorial Album

tough call, I am not sure at all, but just going on impulse, I'd say:

- Monk Genius Vol. 1 & 2

- Bud Vol. 1 & 2

- Ornette @ Golden Circle Vol. 1 & 2

- Andrew Hill "Point of Departure"

- Eric Dolphy "Out to Lunch"

- Cannonball Adderley "Something Else"

- Hank Mobley "Soul Station"

that's already ten, and they include no Jackie Mac (probably Let Freedom Ring, or Destination Out), no Mogie (Procrastinator), Blakey (Free For All or Moanin'), no Silver (Stylings? no idea which I'd pick there... maybe Song for My Father?), JOS (Back at the Chicken Shack!!!), no Larry Young (Unity), no "Idle Moments", no "Stick Up!", no "Unit Structures" (HELLYEAH! Pity RVG wasn't able to record that one decently)... and no Bechet, Edmond Hall, James P., no Art Hodes, no Tina Brooks, no Joe Henderson (Page One?), no K.D. (Whistle Stop), no Dexter (Our Man in Paris), no Herbie Hancock (Inventions & Dimensions). Not easy, indeed!

Very hard. Some of the first that come to mind are

Monk (everything) (counts as 2.5 discs)

Grant Green: Nigeria (counts as 0.5 discs) :P

Bud Powell volume 1

Kenny Dorham: Whistle Stop

Sonny Clark: Soul Struttin' (despite the fact that it was a consensus overrated pick on the other thread)

Art Blakey: Moanin'

Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers

Kenny Burrell: Midnight Blue

Elmo Hope Trio

Hank Mobley - Soul Station

Lou Donaldson - Blues Walk

Lee Morgan - Lee-Way

Art Blakey - Moanin'

Grant Green - Idle Moments

Funny you include Z.T.'s Blues - that's one for the overrated thread, in my opinion... since people over there are just listing what they can't "connect" with, that would definitely be one where that's the case for me...

Is Nigeria the one with Blakey going apeshit during Clarke's solo on "It Ain't Necessarily" so? That tune is soooo feghing great, it overshadows the whole 2CD set with these Green/Clark sessions for me.

I guess I'll take a shot at it:

John Coltrane - "Blue Train"

Sonny Rollins - "A Night at the VV"

Wayne Shorter - "Speak No Evil"

Lee Morgan - "The Gigolo"

Larry Young - "Unity"

Andrew Hill - "Point of Departure"

Herbie Hancock - "Maiden Voyage"

Jackie McLean - "Right Now"

McCoy Tyner - "The Real McCoy"

Edit: REALLY wish I could have had one more slot for "Go"

Sonny Clark Trio is another one... not sure what I'd throw out to have that one in, but it's terrific! I think I like it best from all of Sonny's great BN albums.

YES! That would have probably been the next one on my list, and as much for Philly Joe as for Sonny Clark.

REALLY wish I could have had one more slot for "Go"

That's what I found also, just one more slot!

Amyways, here's mine:

Art Blakey - Mosaic (strongest writing on a Blue Note Blakey disc, and amazing playing)

Donald Byrd - Free Form (for the title track, maybe the most magic of all Blue Note cuts for me)

Freddie Hubbard - Ready For Freddie (see, Jim, I really will take it to the grave with me)

Jackie McLean - One Step Beyond (New Thing never sounded any fresher than here)

Jackie McLean - Jacknife (again for one track, the amazing "On The Nile")

Lee Morgan - The Gigolo (for the second side, "You Go To My Head" and title track)

Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time (my favorite Rollins album, period.)

Wayne Shorter - Ju-Ju (tough to pick one Shorter, but this one's consistently wonderful)

McCoy Tyner - Expansions

McCoy Tyner - Extensions (Couldn't leave either off - today meeting tomorrow at the cusp of the 70's)

It hurt me to not include 'Empyrian Isles' ( for "Oliloqui Valley"), 'Speak No Evil' (for "Infant Eyes"), 'Lee Morgan' (for "Capra Black"), 'Coalition' (for "Simone") and others, but 10 is 10, and I'm the guy who wrote the rules here. I was also tempted to include James Newton 'Romance in Revolution' from the "new" Blue Note, but wasn't willing to drop any of my chosen 10 to do so.

Three Sounds, Moods

Stanley Turrentine, Blue Hour

John Coltrane, Blue Train

Hank Mobley, Soul Station

Jackie McLean, Bluesnik

Dexter Gordon, Doin Allright

Ike Quebec, Blue & Sentimental

Art Blakey, Moanin'

Donald Byrd, Royal Flush

Lou Donaldson, The Natural Soul

It was pretty easy picking until I got to number 10 and realized that I didn't have a Grant Green, a Lee Morgan, a Wayne Shorter. So I picked a Lou Donaldson instead. :P

That's the one. "Apeshit" is an appropriate description! Dead on in your assessment of that set; this track makes it worth the cost of the set alone. :tup

Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple

Thelonious Monk - Genius Vol. 1 & 2

Kenny Burrell - Introducing

Hank Mobley - Soul Station

Bobby Hutcherson - Total Eclipse

Julius Watkins Sextet

Horace Silver - Quintet (the two 10" sessions)

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else

McCoy Tyner - Extensions

p.s. had to make a change after reading the others' lists and thinking it over!

I can still remember the first days after I got that set.... I kept playing that tune again and again, cranking up the volume!

Joe Henderson - Mode For Joe

Pulled this one at the last second ... great record!

Great record, and the one I've always professed to be my all-time favorite Joe Henderson date.

BUT, I think I'm gonna update my list above, and change it to include INNER URGE instead.

Those first three tunes -- Inner Urge, Isotope, and El Barrio -- are completely off the hook, some of THE best Joe on record.

Damn, this really needs to be a "top-20" list.
