On my deserted island I have unlimited access to Riverside, Prestige, Contemporary, hats, and so forth. So I'll get my Dolphy, Rollins, Ornette elsewhere. :P Still, it's tough. Despite the above conditions I'll still double up on the Monk. Apologies to Midnight Blue, Somethin' Else, Right Now!, Amazing Bud Powells, Hill and so on.

Blakey Birdland Vol. 1

Dexter Gordon - Our Man In Paris

Grant Green - Idle Moments

Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles

Bobby Hutcherson - Components

Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring

Monk Genius Vol. 1

Monk - Genius Vol. 2

Ike Quebec - It Might As Well Be Spring

Sam Rivers - Fuchsia Swing Song

I a mixup in shipping to the island occured and I get Indestructable! & Go instead I wouldn't complain.

Here's what I'd take if I were leaving today:

In no particular order -

Herbie Nichols Trio

Ornette - Golden Circle Vol. 1

Curtis Fuller: Two Bones

Port of Harlem Jazzmen - ok, it's a Mosaic LP, but it's Blue Note material

Cecil Taylor: Conquistador!

Art Blakey: Birdland Vol. 1

Dizzy Reece: Blues in Trinity

Ike Quebec: Blue & Sentimental

Tina Brooks: Minor Move

Sonny Clark: Leapin' and Lopin'

Hated to leave off Monk and Trane at Carnegie Hall - issued on Blue Note, but not really a BN recording.

My initial reaction to the thread title was that I would take my chances and try swimming to a better island, but with the caveat that I get to change my mind later, my picks are

John Coltrane - Blue Train

Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch

Art Blakey - Free for All

Don Cherry - Where is Brooklyn

Monk Genius vol. 2

Wayne Shorter - Juju or Odyssey - gonna have to think about this...

Cecil Taylor Unit Structures

Andrew Hill - Andrew!!!

Bud Powell - Amazing vol. 1

Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring

Grant Green Sunday Mornin (yes, Idle Moments is better, but somehow this is the one I'd want)

Dexter Gordon Go

PS: I use the duodecimal system.

Any of the Blue Note CD compilations including such important Blue Note artists such as Chet Baker or Julie London would be fine with me.

This is likely my own ignorance showing, but did Chet Baker actually ever record for Blue Note? I thought he only ended up being reissued by BN because EMI bought Pacific Jazz and put it under BN's control.

Better check with Blue Note! Both Julie London and Chet Baker show up on Blue Note compilations; so, they MUST have recorded for Blue Note, right? Blue Note would NEVER dream of misrepresenting their back catalog, would they?

I must admit I'm enjoying reading all your top ten lists -- we interact daily but this gives a little more insight into all of you.

just make sure you mentally add the Herbie Nichols and Dameron/Navarro sets to my 10 - otherwise you might be unaware of an important part of my personality :)

Chris, the rule was 10 discs, not 100! 10 individual releases! A big part of the experience is going through the difficult exercise of cutting the list down to 10. We get your point, and love the bodies of work by Blakey and Silver, but I can't count any of your picks in my tally unless you cut it down to 1o individual albums!
