That's what that percussion instrument is! I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

rostasi
There's a place for the ashram songs, but maybe not coupled with the Impulse! ones. Can I buy "Alice Costlane" at the Costco?
jazzbo
I have this material I believe on a cassette release. I find the material fascinating, but it's definitely not for everyone. I'll order this cd next time I make a big order from cdjapan (I can't add it to the order I have in place as I used a coupon for that order and you can't change an order you've used a coupon on). It seems to me the kind of stuff you'd be able to buy at a meditation centre. Not suitable for general release. Can you remember where you bought the cassette, Lon? jazzbo
I didn't buy it, I traded for it with another Coltrane nut.

rostasi
Yeah, there's a series of stuff on cassette that was released from the Ashram starting in the 80s. I think I've transferred almost all of them to digital by now. Edited June 2, 2021 by rostasi
JSngry
I'm thinking there were three ashram cassettes? If so, they were all blogged back in the day, and portions were included in the official compilation for a a few years ago. I like this stuff quite a bit, actually, and would recommend it to all but the most hesitant.

Haven't pulled it out in a while and went to look at it and it isn't where I thought it was . . . story of my life! It's good, some of it really fierce, but I like her orchestral and her more overtly spiritual work for Warners a tad more. Transfiguration! Rabshakeh
Is it standard ashram music? Or is there a specific Alice Coltrane slant?
rostasi
They’re all basically Vedanta students providing choral backing to Coltrane’s singing of Vedic chants accompanied by her keyboard playing - usually, organ or synthesizer.

Rabshakeh
Thanks. Seems like an odd choice of a reissue, but I suppose Alive Coltrane is valuable property these days.
rostasi
I think Dead Coltrane has been valuable property for quite a while too.

JSngry
Vegan hot dogs are the ultimate disincentive to use the Costlane.
