Are jazz reissues dead?

Remember that the last round of Legacy reissues was afflicted with that awful copy-protection scheme that was so bad the discs had to be recalled. The financial loss from that means the bean counters won't be smiling on their jazz reissue program anytime soon.

Now that it's Sony/BMG, that screws up reissues from the RCA catalog too.

Plus, look at the response around here to the last batch of RVG's. Two threads totalling five pages. Pretty tepid response for what I thought was one of the strongest batches in a year already packed with strong RVG releases.

Could be that most of us have most of them in one form or another. I certainly do.

Not dead, just resting. Like Chris said, it's just a dead time of year (even for new releases.)

There will be Conns sometime, and hats. I'm kinda curious what Columbia might release just because it seems to be a more mysterious process. Or maybe it's just Blue Note talk drowns it out.

Speaking of Blue Note, from other threads here's a reminder of what's coming RVG-wise:

February 2007 (6 RVGs)

Lou Donaldson - Lush Life (7 tracks)

Kenny Drew - Undercurrent (6 tracks)

Johnny Griffin - Introducing (bonus tracks) (8 tracks)

Duke Pearson - The Right Touch (bonus track) (7 tracks)

Horace Silver - You Gotta Take A Little Love (7 tracks)

Stanley Turrentine - The Spoiler (bonus track) (7 tracks)

March 2007

Donald Byrd - The Cat Walk (6 tracks)

Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse (6 tracks)

Andrew Hill - Compulsion (4 tracks)

Thad Jones - Detroit-New York Junction (5 tracks)

Jackie McLean - New And Old Gospel (3 tracks)

Art Taylor - A.T.'s Delight (6 tracks)

Jazz reissues always were for specialists, especially those well done.

I reckon that reissues from the SONY/BMG vaults will be handled by Mosaic in the future.

I heard from some private source that Verve/Universal has something planned, but I'll believe it only when I hold them in my hands .....

Is it too late to suggest to Michael Cuscuna that he could fit most of the material from Landslide onto the Clubhouse reissue? I think one track is already out there elsewhere, and the rest would fit. Then, all of DG would be in RVG status.

I wish this has come to me before.

If anyone can post the tracks and timings from Landslide and Clubhouse, that would be great.

Bertrand.

Chronologically, the Landslide material would rather go with Dexter Calling - it was recorded before the Go / A Swingin' Affair sessions. Clubhouse is fine as it is, that Landslide material is not up to the level of Clubhouse. IIRC Leo Parker was supposed to be on these sessions, as a reunion of the roommates in the Eckstine band, but Parker died before the date - the shadow of his passing was all over Dexter, the way I hear him play ....

Jazz reissues are alive and well...in Andorra.

Sad, but true.

In the jazz department of the FNAC in Brussels (the largest media store in the belgian capital), it's the latest Lonehill/Gambit/etc CDs that are featured in their new releases section most of the time, followed by the Blue Note RVGs.

Exactly, there are no laws that punish people who don't have the latest re-re-re-re-master. Nowadays I find encomiable keeping in catalog lesser known titles, and the resurruction of obscure sessions.
