The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions ( Jams #7, #8, #9) with Eldridge, Gillespie, Webster et al

51Y60576DFL._SS500_.jpg

Of interest in High Times Hard Times was Anita O'Day's observation about his Personal Supervision, as consisting largely of his mere presence at the session and she gave him no credit at all. She also wrote with some bitterness to the effect that he took advantage of, or in some sense exploited the "hypes" (addicts). Certainly he deserved credit for keeping them gainfully employed and recorded, often when the world wasn't exactly beating down the door etc...

In any event, I'm glad that he recorded these sessions as it's the closest we'll ever get to the cutting contests and after hours sessions.

This arrived from the Da Bastards a while back but today was my first chance to spin it.

Gerry Mulligan Sextet: San Diego Concert 1954/Complete Studio Sessions 1955 to 1956

The set is a great companion to my Concert Jazz Band Mosaic. Hopefully Mosaic will reissue this stuff soon.

Spent a fair bit of today diggin the 'Joe Henderson Complete Milestone' box and the 'Eric Dolphy Complete Prestige' box. The Dolphy is of course desert island material but the Henderson is a fascinating insight to his neglected 'middle period'. Disks 7 and 8 with 'The Elements', the Flora Purim tracks and 'Black Narcissus' are very good - strange that 'Black Narcissus' doesn't get more plaudits.

If you enjoy French pop, you should appreciate this, 5 cds full of music and if they are some familiar name Arthur H. Next in line on the box set front. The story of saxophone Jazz brought to you by the same people who made the very fine series Les trésors du jazz.

This 10 cd boxset gives you music by the finest players before 1956 in a chronoligical order by selected instruments. Cd 1 starts with a selection of soprano sax performers, starring Sydney Bechet and Johnny Hodges ending with a Steve Lacy performance with the piece Johnny came lately from Cecil Taylor at Newport.

Afterwards, it begins the selection of Alto saxophones with Frank Trumbauer rendition of Singin' the blues circa february 1927 and it goes on with music from Otto Hardwicke, Paul "Stump" Evans, Benny Carter and many others.

Unfortunately, i can't find any tracklisting available on the net.

Isn't that what freedom of intellectual property - or whatever the current catch phrase is - I'm old enough to remember "Music belongs to the people!" - is all about?

Miles - On the Corner - CD1 :)

followed with CD2 yesterday - mighty great stuff!

now: discs 2 and 3 of the Mingus Debut box - the Massey Hall concert - drum solo, the trio set and the original tapes, which I've never heard before... with the bass boosted up a bit, they sound fine, though that interplay of his original and the newly overdubbed bass phrases, I think on "All the Things You Are", is of course a treat as well!
