Chuck Nessa
Again - love this set! Good but not of the quality of the Black Lion dates and much of the SteepleChase material. The Columbia stuff traces the end.
John Tapscott
Again - love this set! Good but not of the quality of the Black Lion dates and much of the SteepleChase material. The Columbia stuff traces the end. I know, but I still like it a lot. My favorite Dexter albums are actually "The Apartment" on Steeplechase and "Our Man in Paris" on Blue Note. colinmce
Jazz Piano: A Smithsonian Collection (Smithsonian), Disc 2 I really can't recommend this one enough. The discs are split roughly into 1: early jazz & stride, 2: swing to bop, 3: bebop, 4: postbop. Mary Lou Williams, Art Tatum, Ellington, Jess Stacy, Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Jimmy Jones, and Bud Powell on this volume. The material is easy enough to find elsewhere, but as a listening experience this is well worth tracking down. As with most Smithsonian box sets, it's absurdly cheap secondhand. I got mine for about $10. Four CDs in a handsome 12x12 box with a thick booklet of annotations by Dick Katz
