PEREZ PRADO

Perez Prado, the King of Mambo, was a popular band leader of the 1950s in the US, who had several number one hits. His Cuban dance band was influenzed by Stan Kenton. I found this great 45 rpm recording, of one of his 1956 hits, Patricia, with a pleasent cover. I also found a film fragment in which Perez Prado is the guest in a Spike Jones show.

Ya gotta hear "Voodoo Suite" (if you haven't already) and the harder to find "Concierto para Bongo," both of which take up an LP side. "Exotic Suite of the Americas," another extended work, is less satisfying IMHO.

As far as "hardcore" Latin music goes, Prado descended into self-parody/cliche once he became "known", but there's some good stuff to be found early on.

I realized yesterday that I have all these Perez Prado albums, and that I've hardly listened to him in years.  I need to correct that. 

Now listening to an excellent Rhino collection on CD.
