Stan Kenton Orchestra - City of Glass (Capitol)

I just picked this up a week ago; pretty impressive stuff. On the other hand, it will probably remain my sole Kenton disc...

I really like this disc. I must admit, some of Graettinger's writing/arranging gives me nightmares! Kinda spooky stuff, no?

As for Kenton himself, I absolutely adore the 1940s-early 1950s material, but a good amount of the material after this leaves me cold. The man could put together a band, though, and I don't care if the band swings or not when it comes to City of Glass. It's very rich in composition and arrangement.

Mobley - No Room for Squares

Mingus - Blues and Roots

Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus

Miles - It's About That Time - Live at the Fillmore East

and a real sleeper for those of you who are in to slightly more "out" fare:

Tsahar / Ragin / Kowald / Drake - Open Systems

Killer disc with some of my favorite Kowald so far as well as great performances from all involved. I've not been a huge fan of Assif Tsahar but this disc smokes! I played it twice straight through driving up from Boston last night, which is very rare for me.

How is the Marc Ribot disc? I have the first Cubanos disc and dig it. Been eyeing the second one, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
