rostasi
Here's one of those treats that I've heard about for a long time, but never knew if it really existed. This one, and his famous appearance on an Italian TV quiz show. What makes this so unusual is that they decided to CANCEL the game part of the show and just let Cage perform! Had this ever been done before - re-arranging a set of TV game show rules in order to accommodate a guest? Also, when you click on the link, you'll see two more links to a famous appearance of Frank Zappa on "The Steve Allen Show." You'll see a very young and clean-shaven Zappa perform music on a bicycle! I've seen the Zappa performance several times, but the Cage performance is one that I've always heard about but nobody I know has ever seen it! http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/04/john_cage_on_a_.html
JSngry
Too bad there wasn't time for the panel discussion - "Polio Bill" Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, & Bess Meyerson would surely have had some trenchant & penetrating commentary. Especially Henry Morgan.
rostasi
I was thinking this as well. There is a quote from Cage that comes from these discussions: "If you act in the field of sounds unintentionally there is no concern about the beginning, middle, or ending, and that process resembles our environment." Chas
Interesting........Cage ( looking like David Lynch and sounding like Vincent Price ) , demonstrating that visually , musique concrète can become a kind of performance art whose entertainment value need not vitiate any underlying artistic value or seriousness of purpose . Would that they had allowed him to perform 4'33" instead !
.:.impossible
Fascinating response from the crowd. I also watched the Steve Allen Frank Zappa clips. It reminds me of something a percussionist friend of mine who has been composing with a dance troupe over the past year or so. Suddenly, "avant-garde" sound is entirely accepted, by an audience who otherwise would not have accepted the sounds, when paired with theatre... Or TV detective shows from the 1960s and 70s. There's plenty of pretty "modern" stuff going on musically, as a means to build tension and suspense. paul secor
Seeing this made me wonder what a 1960 TV audience would have made of Ornette if he had been a guest.
