Definitely count me in on the Dexter, the Wes and the Trane, and probably the Duke as well. I just wish the Dex had more with Kenny Drew but beggars can't be choosers. This 1960 JATP video has been floating around the world (very few copies until recent showings on youtube) for quite sometime. The Jazz Icons release will feature the ballad medley set, too, which is killin'. Getz and Coltrane really shine on this one and it is a huge treat to see/hear Paul Chambers and Wynton Kelly, too. I couldn't stop smiling last night when I received the announcement email from David Peck/Jazz Icons. Other than that, I'm very much looking forward to the Dexter Gordon set with Kenny Drew and especially A.T. on drums - rare to find any video with Art Taylor. Also, the Wes, Vaughan, Mingus and Ellington stuff looks great - count me in for a purchase of the entire box set in September. As for Drew: just because you don't know Gruntz, don't diss him! He's a fine pianist and has in the late 60s founded his great Concert Jazz Band. He recently celebrated his 70th birthday and is still doing annual tours with his big band. The band always includes a number of great US players, in its rank have been guys like Ray Anderson, Marvin Stamm, Alex Sipiagin, Danny Gotlieb, Doug Purviance, Frank Lacy and many, many others. Anyway, he's a very good pianist in a small group setting as well. In 63 or 64 he also played for Kirk on an tour in Europe (some of those recordings are on the 32 Jazz 3CD set "Dog Years in the Fourth Ring"). The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band played at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth years ago--it was a fine concert with a mix of European and American players--Enrico Rava and Lee Konitz were both in the band. It is a beauty, with Griffin and A.T. playing off each other. A great representation of both. I believe the date on my copy is 1971/France. My copy is in very good shape, but I still hope someday this one is released by Peck/Jazz Icons. It is my hope that somehow, schools and colleges/universities have budget to purchase a set of both Jazz Icons series for their libraries. It opens with a Coltrane/Elvin Jones duet--even though recorded in August, it is cold in Belgium--Elvin is emitting waves of steam into the cold air--this piece becomes something resembling Vigil. Followed by a fabulous version of Naima, and finally a dynamic version of My Favorite Things, akin to the Newport version. Intense playing by McCoy; great shots of Jimmy Garrison. Incredible. I have the Art Blakey from the first series. I would really like to get more of these. I love how the Dexter begins. A man walks into a bar... The Coltrane, Ellington and Brubeck are terrific too (especially the first 2.) Were it not for having about 1/2 the Mingus on a Dolphy dvd I would have grabbed that (and I still might someday.) Top notch indeed, and as budget permits I plan on getting more. I have that Dolphy DVD, which I bought mainly for the Mingus half, so I hesitated to buy the Jazz Icons Mingus - but did it anyway. The new Mingus has much better video and audio than the earlier version. Plus, having the other two concerts on there makes it essential, IMO. You won't find any better Mingus on video anywhere - so far, anyway. Now if I can only persuade them to put out a DVD of all the film shot by Tom Reichman at Lennie's On The Turnpike of Mingus, only a small percentage of which was used in the documentary, "Mingus." It makes me wish American networks and stations spent more time documenting and preserving jazz on video (remember the moron who tossed early kinescopes of Steve Allen's Tonight Show with so many great performances lost forever). I face the same problem with the Monk from the first series thanks to the Live At The Olympia bonus DVD, and I recall someone saying the Jazz Icons is also better quality. Tom Reichman was a graduate student when he made that film in about '67, so that means he's probably in his 60's now, if he's still around. I can't imagine why he would get rid of it, although stranger things have happened. I'm going to try Googling him. Actually, I should probably just get in touch with Sue Mingus; I bet she knows where it is. And yes, I was surprised that day when I walked into Lennie's and saw that John Gilmore was on tenor and Walter Bishop was on piano. At that time, I hadn't ever heard of them playing with Mingus. The music that day was outstanding, as you can tell from the excerpts in the film. I'd buy that in a second if it ever comes out as the complete day's gig (it was a Sunday afternoon, as I recall). I already owned a DVD called Wes Montgomery in Europe with the Belgium broadcast and what I presumed was the same London Concert. Figured I'd trade that one in, but I've discovered that the London concert on the older disc is a different one! From March 25th (they say) with the Maburn, Harper, Lovelace quartet.
