Any thoughts as to why my left foot is swollen all of the

Recommended Posts

Sounds like a joke, but it isn't. I just noticed when I was sitting down, that my left foot was swollen. Never, ever had a problem like this before! My ankles is swollen as well, and only now do I notice my foot feeling spongy. My Mom was a diabetic , and had problems with water retention all of her life, which only got worse as she had heart issues. I have just discovered my blood sugar has been a bit high, and have been exercising a lot more, and trying to eat less. But, didn't exercise yesterday, had no pain in my leg, and was going to go to the gym in just a little while before I discovered this problem. Too late to call my Doc today, any thoughts???? Thanks.....

I happen to know a little about possible causes from an ex-girlfriend who had a similar problem. I don't want to freak you out, but if you think your insurance probably wouldn't give you a hassle over a trip to the ER, it isn't a bad idea. If you aren't comfortable with your insurer, then leave a message for your doctor and follow up with another call first thing in the morning. You might be able to call your insurer right now to get pre-approval.

This can be serious, or it could be merely annoying - but you need to see a doctor to figure out which.

Guys, (and Guy  ) thanks for the suggestions....

Last time I went to the ER, I went about 2 years ago when I blew out a disc in my back, and couldn't even walk. Had a friend wheel me in, and it was a nightmare. Waited hours, and when I finally saw someone after much begging,(At the time, the pain and the pain pills I was taking, I couldn't even pee in a cup for them, I know, TMI!) all I could get was an X-ray of my back. That, and some weak pain pills. And a big bill.

So, I'd rather see my Doctor tomorrow. It's just really lousy timing. My Dad and I are supposed to go to L.A. to see my Uncle, Thursday. Don't know why my one foot is swollen, and it doesn't seem too smart to fly now does it?????

I confirm: See a doctor NOW!

I had a similar thing four years ago, but on both feet, in the end it was a psychosomatic appearance, and after the causes were cleared it went like it came. But I got myself checked for cardiac etc. causes, which are very probable, especially if it is one-sided. I do not want to frighten you, but please check!

p.s. please report!

We have "Urgent Care" facilities around here, that you can avoid the high copay of the ER, some can do anything the ER can, e.g. x-ray, etc.

My wife and I learned that unless you've got a gunshot wound or a cardiac event, the "urgent care" office is a much better bet. Back in May my wife went downhill extraordinarily quickly from what she felt was the onset of a sinus infection to having a high fever, major trembling, blue complexion and debilitating pain in her back. She got home from work at 6:30 and I made the decision to take her straight to the ER.

Bottom line:

She spent four hours there, saw the Doctor for two minutes, he ordered a blood test that showed an infection. When we got there, they asked me for a $350 fee as a "deposit" for the visit. Turns out that the sign that said that ER physicians are Independent Contractors wasn't just for liability issues but actually meant that you'd get a separate bill for the Doctor's services.

So, the $350 I paid covered:

The triage nurse taking down her info

The two Tylenol tablets given for her fever

The drawing of blood for testing

and the inability to insert an IV needle

A week later we got a bill for $432 for the Doctor who got his degree from the University of Grenada and spent two minutes examining her, and a $30 bill for the actual testing of the blood sample.

$800 total, and for the same service from an urgent care facility, we might have paid $150.

The lesson learned is to get sick during the day, and don't go to the ER unless you absolutely, positively have to.

Thanks again for the suggestions and concern.....

Well, doesn't appear to be anything serious. P.A. checked me out, and since I don't have any pain to speak of, he just gave me a diuretic(blood pressure is a bit high as well) Interestingly, he said something that I had read on the web as well, that sometimes people have a problem during the summer months.

I was afraid since my Mom had congestive heart failure, that perhaps something like that was going on, but still seemed strange to have this in only one leg. No that my heart seems to be aok, I will go swimming(Which looks like a home remedy for fluid retention on the web) and later go to the gym. If I knew it would have been safe yesterday, I would have been curious to see if this swelling would go down via exercise,(Perhaps this had been going on for awhile, but didn't notice having socks on and working out) but since I have already taken the pill, won't know what had the biggest benefit.

Oh, and the urgent care place near us last night closed fairly early. Like Dan, I would try to go there first off as well in the future. Going to the E.R. with my Mom a few times, and with myself, has been a nightmare each time. But, if you have any heart troubles, they really do take those cases seriously from what I saw......

Glad it's safe for me to go to L.A. to see Friday Foster, I mean my Uncle Thursday! :)

Any thoughts as to why my left foot is swollen all of the, sudden??

You best lay off the Hokey Pokeying for a while?

Sorry

We call it "Hokey-cokey" over here.

Glad you're not too bad Berigan.

Vote for socialised medecine!

PS - it's really a drag to see you guys - who I guess are all not badly off to avoid buying CDs - really worrying about the costs of medical treatment. Mucho sympathy.
