Piano Mood set running low, available: Herman Capitol and Capitol Jazz

I just got this e-mail from Mosaic:

RUNNING LOW

The Columbia Jazz Piano Mood Sessions (7 CDs) $112

A Treasure Trove of Artistry And Technique

In 1950, Columbia Records set out to chronicle the then-current musical landscape under the banner "Piano Moods." We've chosen to re-release, for the first time in nearly fifty years, the jazz sides from the Piano Moods series.

There's the lush complexity of Errol Garner; Joe Sullivan's rugged lope; the quiet eloquence of Eddie Heywood; Jess Stacy's expressive use of dynamics and upbeat attitude; the delicate command of Teddy Wilson. Additional highlights include a thrilling, live solo-session from Art Tatum, recorded at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium a year before the Piano Moods project began and two drummer-less sessions from Ahmad Jamal recorded in 1951-52, with Ray Crawford on guitar and Eddie Calhoun on bass.

The Mosaic Records booklet includes a behind-the-scenes look at the series by the original producer George Avakian and an essay by pianist Dick Katz.

A WAREHOUSE FIND

A few weeks ago our manufacturing plant notified us that they had a few sets on hand for two out-of-print sets. We had extra booklets and boxes and their find is now some jazz fans good fortune as we always aim to put these sets into as many collections as possible. Also please be assured that these are part of the limited edition. We did not sell out the full edition before the lease for our pressing of the recordings expired.

#196 The Complete Capitol Recordings of Woody Herman (6 CDs) $96

#170 Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions (12 CDs) $192

sent in an order for the Herman... ouch! not sure I need the Jazz Piano Moods set... and somewhat sad to see this one go so fast when much more interesting sets have taken ages only to time out... on the other hand, it's from 2000 so it's not that fast, but to me still any set with a number of 200 or higher is new (this is 199).

I'm skint but the 'Piano Moods' set looks like one to have. Hope it holds out a few weeks.

I wasn't even sure I had the Herman but a quick check confirmed that fortunately I have. Things are getting bad when you cannot even keep track of which ones you have and which ones you have not.

This is NOT muzak!

There's actually both a homogeneity as far as form and structure and a deep variety in this set as far as performance and style.

I really haven't given this set the time I should, and I'm going to correct that.

Discography attached below.

PRODUCER'S NOTE: Initially, the idea of this set was to gather the jazz and jazz-oriented Piano Moods LPs on Columbia. (The Piano Moods series which fall outside the scope of this set are those by Dardanelle, Nat Brandywynne, Joe Reichman, Walter Gross, Cy Walter, Eadie & Rack and Jose Melis.) We expanded the scope slightly to include other piano sessions on Columbia that fell into 10" LP oblivion such as the Tatum concert, the Waller albums by Ralph Sharon and Joe Sullivan and Ahmad Jamal's first recordings: two single sessions for Okeh.

Because many of the Piano Moods albums had transitional passages that modulate from the key of the previous tune to the key of the next, we've preserved the original sequence of each 10" album as released.

Most of these sessions took place during 1950-51, the period of transition from disc to magnetic tape. As a result, some of these sessions that come from tape (then a new medium for engineers) have more tape hiss than usual. There are also some instances of wow and flutter. In every case, we sought and used the best available master source and restored them as best as possible.
