Keith Jarrett on a Rant

plus he isn't nearly as good as so many others who do not get the accolades he gets.

never grateful that he has those crowds that guys like Paul Bley will never get.

And Paul Bley is a far greater musician, innovator and thinker than Jarrett ever was.

nothing more disturbing than a jazz/improvising musician with a sizeable audience who is an ungrateful nasty asshole.

Why? It's one small aspect of his personality, similar to Horowitz's finickiness. If you like the recordings, then it's mostly good. After all, you wouldn't refuse to see an Alex Baldwin movie because of his Twitter rants...?

Having said that, Keith was wrong to accept the engagement if he was going to be on edge; that's not fair to the audience.

Yes I would. I would certainly refuse to pay to see him.

Jack DeJohnette on his FB had an open dialogue with the fans on this subject, and I have to say I'm with Keith and Jack on this one. Fans have such a sense of entitlement when they go to a concert, and the main attitudes the effect the LCD of culture at concerts has been involved in jazz a bit too much. When I go to a gig, I enjoy in the moment, I know it is not my right to encroach on the performers with my personal needs to have a personal "souvenir". Jack explained when you are in the moment with your eyes closed putting your best into the music and you see the flash how distracting it gets, and I appreciated that perspective from a musician I admire so much. Needless to say some fans clearly don't get it and feel the need to treat the gigs as social events rather than take in the music at that moment.

How does one see the flash if one's eyes are closed? And the photo was taken even before the music started. C'mon. Jarrett is a sick and ignorant man. Fans pay big $$$ to see this group and the Jarrett Trio doesn't mind taking the money, which I'm sure is one of the steepest fees in the jazz world. So there's got to be some give and take. To me it's the Trio which thinks they're self-entitled. Who the he*& do they think they are? Sure, this is a very good group, they're no better than a lot of jazz groups through the years, who've had to put up with fans taking pictures, coughing, drinking, eating, farting etc.

And if Jarrett hates the public and live audiences so much, why doesn't he do what Glenn Gould did - just become a hermit and make nothing but studio recordings. It would help his reputation.

Alex Jarrett?

Too many assholes with cameras wherever at cultural events - they turned viral long ago. When have you been to a museum last where people actually were looking at the pictures or sculptures or artificialised crapola, instead of just taking pictures?

I don't understand that mindset at all - you miss the entire magic of the moment ... by preserving it for eternity (or rather until the memory card breaks or the hard drive goes amiss) ... and you'll never, ever, revisit those thousands and thousands of photos anyway ... and yeah, you're annoying those that don't want you to take all those pictures, so bugger off and eat your cameras or stick them someplace else, please.

at some point, about 10 years ago, i had my fill of jarrett. he had been one of my top ten artists for decades; i excitedly waited for each new issue, article, or article. i have probably 5 dozen of his recordings.

there are hundreds of fine interesting pianists in this world well worth hearing.........i've just had my fill of KJ at this point....... KJ is not god. as for being subjected to a kj live concert; i have no desire to be held hostage by any artist.

So he played a whole set in near-total darkness? No matter what the reason, that's a pretty cool thing to do from a conceptual standpoint.

"This is sort of like radio"? Really? What radio? Where? Today? Sign me up for that one, and don't touch that dial!

Remember when it was ok for all this stuff to make you uncomfortable?

I've not bought any new Jarrett music for quite a while, but mainly because it was getting too comfortable.

Hell, he is who he is. Buy it or not, go see him or not. It'll all still be there wither way.

Radio!
