Interestingly, there's a thread on AAJ about the O board situation, and Mr. Ricci kind of turned it into a thread about needing to drum up money to run that board. He says that it costs them $40K/yr!

I think we're doing great on the budget we have, and have a better board all around!

Amen brother E!

I got a good laugh out of the development of that thread this morning!

Okay, first and foremost I can't even believe what I am seeing in my Paypal account. Stop donating please before I have enough money to open a Swiss bank account and skip the country! ;) We have more than paid for the site for this year, and even into the next. The total in my Paypal is $2655.06!!! And that's not even including any checks that have or will be sent.

I am in Indy right now, but I'll be back home tomorrow afternoon and I will call CIHost to see how far in advance I can pay for my server. I can't even imagine not having to worry about this place financially for almost 18 months! Wow!

I've tried to write a line to thank everybody but I keep deleting it and re-writing it and I just can't find the words to express my gratitude and the love and support I feel from everyone. It's just amazing.

I guess the next step is to pick two or three moderators that can help carry the load of maintaing "law and order". I'm going to think about this one for awhile and any suggestions are welcome. Perhaps PMing me is the best way, so people don't feel put out or left out or whatever.

Again, thank you all. I'm just in shock. Absolute shock.

Jim, I'm glad this is how this has turned out. I pretty much felt it WOULD turn out this way. We care about the board, and we are grateful for all you've done, and we care about how this has impacted you and your family.

chris don't delete the list - i think a email list of my favorite jazz buddies would be something nice to have and i would like a copy as i am sure others would.

If anyone who is on the list of 78 concerned members does not wish a fellow listee to have his/her handle and e-mail, please let me know (at bigoalumni@mac.com) in the next couple of days. I will only give out handle and e-mail (none of the other info some of you sent me), only to others on the list, and only with authorization.

Thanks

After reading Jim reply to my email, and seeing what he wrote here, I'm back on board. Like everyone else, I just didn't want to add stress to a family. But it seems as if everything is working itself out, so I'm in and sent a donation also -- buy your family a special night out with the extra money, you've earned it Jim.

Yeah, with all that loot, a special night at Peter Luger is in order. ;)

Bluerein, let me think about that. :w

When a check clears, tomorrow, another goes out to Jim. This is really great news and it should encourage us to continue sending money in, prevention is indeed preferable to another cure. Now we need to come up with volunteers who will give Jim the time he needs, and I can delete (or archive? Tell me) the list of 78.

As for the other boards, there is no comparison. They are sterile and monitored by people who don't handle well their position of authority. Jim's attitude represents a stark, wonderful contrast. I abandoned the corner about 2 years ago and have never felt a need to return. AAJ is owned/operated by someone for whom I have great respect and wish well, but he has among his monitors at least one man who abuses his authority. That's what drove me away from there. Owners and their monitors are a measure of a board's ambiance--the Big O has ambiance that overrides the occasional bump.

I'm just blathering, but I blame it on the intoxicating turn of events.

Don't fill my inbox full of babes pics, please! ;)

If they were chess babes you'd be singing a different tune! :w

So this looks like it's the end. Or it will be in a few days

It's been an interesting journey for several years...

Thanks must go to Jim A. for providing the place and letting us roam freely. Everybody can understand his reasoning.

The BNBB was the first Board I joined. This was the second. I don't think I will join another one (not JC or AAJ in any case)!

Well, it's time to move on!

Good luck to everyone!

on my way home from work i was just thinking "well if we're moving on i will just go where brownie [father figure of yurpean board members] is going..." come on, losing this board is more than enough for poor souls like me, stay around for another board!

I for one agree with every word Niko wrote.

Having just discovered this topic of O closing down right now (and still trying to recover) and hoping the latest posts really do mean the forum will carry on, at any rate I'll join Niko in asking you to stay around, Brownie in case the worst come to the worst.

But let's hope a new start is now in the works.

Don't mean to contribute to financial chaos, but I say keep the contributions coming. It's time for a Christmas bonus. I for one (a small voice in the crowd) would be thrilled if Jim could use some of the extra money to ease the financial burden of raising a young family. Nothing wrong with paying yourself a little bit, too, for all the work you put into it. In fact, in my eyes, it's only right.

This morning the Paypal account has almost $2800 in it. I just initiated a transfer of $2400 to my bank account and when that goes through (Paypal says 3 to 4 days) I will contact CIHost and see if I can pay for 16 months of the server at once. I might even get to do more, since I think if you pay for a year in advance, they give you a break in price.

I'm going to leave the other almost $400 in the Paypal account for the moment. I expect when the checks come in I might be able to pay up through 2010, which would be fantastic.

I can't thank you guys enough. I think organissimo owes you all some more holiday tunes! :)

Archive!!!! Anything can happen (server failures, etc)!

I know that Jim already has the info, but it might be useful for him to have this particular list (now 79), so I could simply hand it over to him. If I get approval from list people, I am open to any protected disposition--give me guidance, Organistas.

I didn't even bother to try to protect my email by using [at] instead of @, so do with it what you wish, Chris. :)

Jim, I'm kicking in some more $$ for future investment... many, many thanks for everything.

This has been very touching, and I never doubted we would pull together once Jim made it clear what the finances are. I think we ought to try something similar to make sure the band can make another album. The sponsor a song/mp3 idea might be the way to go, or Jim just says we need $X to go back to the studio. I'd be more than happy to contribute to that as well.

Jim,

Is there any way--without spending a ton of your own valuable time or hiring an accountant--to determine how much of your own $$ you've sunk into this operation in 2007? Perhaps some portion of the current surplus, or some of the still incoming end of the year donations (...maybe that are specified to apply to 2007), could be used to pay you back for (at least some of) your past dollar investments. When 2009 approaches, we can have another shout out for shekels.

I echo Lazaro's point that running a BBS should not be taking $ away from pursuing your art. That's tough enough already.
