schwann catalogues

for many years, the schwann catalogue was essential reading/ browsing. listening to this bach today, i recall the seemingly endless bach listings in the schwann.

i havent seen one for years. is there a near equivalent around today, especially those magnificent classical listings?

In my many years writing for Stereo Review, the Schwann catalog was indispensable. The magazine always made sure that reviewers has the latest issue.

I see Alliance Entertainment now owns what's left of Schwann. And AMG. And Concord.

I have kept a few Schwanns; from the sixties and 1981. It's strange seeing the price lists at the end nowadays.

BEfore discographies became seni-"common". getting an old Schwann was a great way to see what albums had been made that you might not know about today. I had one from just before the pre-Liberty "purge" of the BN & PJ catalogs (sorry, I know this is the Classical Forum) that were invaluable in learning what might be out there in those dusty bins...

They were particularly valuable in Britain, where you didn't see ANYTHING in the shops, except one or two specialists in London.

back in the 90s i used to have a crate of two decades worth of schwanns, i think i traded it to some guy for a 78-rpm version of "Voice of the Xtabay"
