ghost of miles
Sounds fantastic, Steve. I'll try to tune in via the net when I get home from WFIU that evening. I keep meaning to pick up that 3-CD Haynes anthology that came out last year...
Lazaro Vega
Sounds good. He spent a lot of time in Sarah Vaughn's trio, too. What a career. Happy to have heard him with Alice Coltrane and Charlie Haden, Ravi on tenor.
ghost of miles
Isn't RH on that great Boston 1952 Bird date that Uptown put out? The one with Mingus, Twardzik... love that date.
Tom Storer
Haynes played Paris on March 12, 2007, and when midnight arrived he announced that it was his 82nd birthday and commanded champagne for the entire band. It was brought on stage and they all stood around drinking champagne as Roy held forth with his stream-of-consciousness patter. They put on a hell of a show that night, too. I recently got the 3-CD+1-DVD box set and it's fantastic. Everybody knows what an extraordinary career he's had, but it's still startling to actually hear that range. Lazaro Vega
The first time Nessa played for me "Impressions" with Coltrane and Haynes, the one which boils down to a tenor/drum duet, sealed the deal on Roy Haynes.
