CJ Shearn
picked up the DHQ's new album yesterday. my first Holland entry, definitely will get more after this, the recommendations for this new record at Jazz Corner got my interests piqued. I finished disc 1 for the second time, "High Wire" Chris Potter just tore into like a motherfucker, what about those bizarre streams of Bird quotes? the third tune is intriguing with it's use of counterpoint vaguely reminded me of Steve Reich, must be the marimba. Anyone else for "Extended Play: Live At Birdland"?
Ed S
Excellent, excellent album. This one has been discussed before, but with little response so the threads kind of got buried: Dave Holland Quintet Live Another Dave Holland Live thread
CJ Shearn
I think what impresses me about this band and this record is that they have an incredible command of metric modulations, ostinatos, etc...
Matthew
I, also, got this cd because of the rave reviews. For some reason, it's one of those cds for me, where I'm not able to listen to more that two numbers at one sitting. There's just a lot of things going on here that I need time to try to catch. So, I'm still haven't left the first cd behind. That being said, this is creative jazz at it's best, I'm especially enjoying Robin Eubanks, haven't heard the trombone played that creatively in a long time. This will be spinning for quite awhile so I can digest it all.
