Hey I just got the November issue of Coda (I guess it takes a while to get from Toronto to Santa Barbara) and there's a very nice review there too.

Thanks! I just sent a copy to Johnny E and the band so it may appear here in the future. I know what you mean about rather slow delivery... Heck, I'm a contributor and I still don't have my copy. ;)

So, when are you guys coming to Austin?

No plans right now, but we did apply to play at this years SXSW. No word as of yet. But I'm sure if you make a phone call to that highly connected individual that you know we'd be in like Flynn. ;)

Our plans for 2009 so far are as follows:

West Coast tour in March (CA, OR, WA plus SXSW if they invite us...not holding my breath)

East Coast Tour in May (NY, Philly, Boston, DC, and more)

Canada (BC and AB) in July

European tour in August

Man, I was just in Georgetown yesterday evening and night (and we also now rehearse in Georgetown) and I gots to tell ya', the neighborhood is coming up. Full Throttle Bottles is a kick ass beer and wine store, there is the Seattle Drum School & Art in Music, Fantagraphics offices and store, Georgetown Records, Stellar Pizza is slammin', there's the Christoff Art Gallery (The Mix) where we're playing, and of course there are still all the pubs (some of the oldest in town) and coffee shops. I love it there. And my son loves how low the planes fly in (Boeing Field is right next door) and all the trains going by. If you haven't been to Georgetown in a while you owe it to your self to check it out.

And in case you don't know it, Sam is also a member of Orkestar Zirkonium - a Balkan-inspired mobile brass-and-drum band cast through an American lens. We are based in Seattle WA, drawing our inspiration from the music of Fanfare Ciocarlia, Kocani Orkestar, Boban Markovic, Goran Bregovic, and others.

More from their web site:

As a marching band, our desire is to facilitate joyous musical spectacles in unexpected locales. Our performances range from the completely unsanctioned to the civically sponsored: We maraud through grocery stores, throw dance parties in fountains and parks, and take over parties as surprise (and, sometimes, invited) guests; we burst uninvited into taverns, play for families at city festivals, provide the soundtrack for underground casinos, and entertain wedding-goers.

It's gonna be good folks. :)

Artist: Reptet

CD: Chicken or Beef?

Home: Seattle, Washington

Style: Jazz/Funk/Rock

By Jana Pochop

Reptet is a force to be reckoned with on disc, simply because it sounds like they are physically crawling off the CD into your living room to rock out when you pop their album, Chicken or Beef? into the player. This Seattle sextet is a dynamic group of drums, bass, and four horns. They would probably be filed under Jazz on your iTunes playlist, but Chicken or Beef? covers expanses of reggae, punk, ska, and plain old rock 'n roll, and all deliciously.

The record starts off with "Danger Notes," a funky track that brings to mind a really good black and white movie with a harrowing chase scene. Reptet is good at painting pictures through their instrumentals and keeping them varied so the listener’s attention never wanders. Tracks like "Eve of Thrieve" and "Fish Market" keep the pace going. "Fish Market" features some fun vocals with the refrain, "Why don’t you get yourself a fillet tonight?" It’s avant-garde and different; some might call it challenging listening because it’s not the typical pop song, but Reptet massages the complicated lines and arrangements with a sense of fun and nonchalance.

Chicken or Beef? captures an energetic, smart band at its best. If the record is any indication, their live show raises the roof wherever they go ... luckily listeners can raise their living room roofs with this disc.

REPTET: GO BEARS

Track Go Bears

Group Reptet

CD Chicken Or Beef? (Monktail MCMC8)

Musicians:

John Ewing (drums, percussion, bull moose call, vocals), Samantha Boshnack (trumpet, flugelhorn, slide trumpet, vocals), Chris Credit (baritone, alto and tenor saxophones, vocals), Tim Carey (upright and electric bass, baritone guitar, vocals), Nelson Bell (trombone, tuba, euphonium, conch shell, vocals), Izaak Mills (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, percussion, bull moose call, vocals), Satchmo (vocals), Jack (vocals)

Composed by Tim Carey

Recorded: Seattle WA, January 6-8 2008

Rating: 86/100 (learn more)

Seattle’s own Reptet is a six-piece band that’s just this side of zany; too unorthodox for Steeplechase and too tonal for ESP-Disk. They might employ a few unusual instruments (like a baritone guitar, a bull moose call or a euphonium) and throw in non-jazz interludes into their jazz, but the songs never quite get too messy to be engaging. “Go Bears” is a pretty good example of their modus operandi.

It begins with a rapid ostinato straight out of a black and white comedy, and then moves into a late-sixties jazz groove led by Credit’s boss baritone. Just as you might start chilling out to it, the tape is speeded up and slowed back down to real time again. The groove soon ends anyway and replaced with Boshnack’s lone mariachi trumpet before returning to the original comedic chase scene music that crashes into a full-on freak-out, Rahsaan Roland Kirk style.

OK, so “Go Bears” might not be so serious, but it’s seriously fun.
