Patrick,

The advice on this thread from a few years ago still applies.

Disk Union stores are definitely the best for price and selection and the web site is

http://diskunion.net/

If you click on shop you can see maps and addresses. In Japanese of course buy you can use google to translate the pages.

Good luck with your shopping!

While you're in Shinjuku you might like to travel a few stops on the Chuo line to Ochanomizu, which has another good Disk Union, with maybe a better used section than the Shinjuku shop. Travel time is about ten minutes. If you need any additional help, feel free to get in touch.

I'll be at the Tokyo Billboard Live October 30 - November 1 with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Happy to comp if I can. Send me a PM if interested.

My scheduled dates for Tokyo are Oct 19th to 23rd - damn, yet again I am one week too early. Would have really liked to have seen the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and been able to say 'hello'. Ah well....

Thanks ! Maybe we can convene a board-member Disk Union store Official Expedition?

Looks like I'll be spending a few days in Tokyo in October en-route to Oz and will of course seek to make a very rapid bee-line straight to Disk Union  . Any recommendations? - will probably be staying in the Shinjuku area.

i'll be making my annual trek in (probably later) october as well...

Excellent !

So jealous...never been to Japan and there's so many Japanese free jazz LPs I'm after!

I've only ever been once before and that was on a 1-hour stopover, over 20 years ago. I've been itching to get back ever since !

Luggage allowance is going to completely mess me up re: record buying.. :(

I'd be game for a meet up any day except Friday and Saturday.

Regarding luggage allowance, have you thought of sending your newly acquired goodies back by mail ? The last bulletin board visitor I met up with did that and it saved him a ton of hassle. The system is called EMS, I've used it many times and can recommend it.. Here are the rates for your perusal -

I'd also get a train pass at your earliest opportunity, it will save you a lot of messing about with tickets. I'll give you whatever details you need.

Sidewinder, if you arrive early enough Sunday October 19th would be a good day to get together (working during the week). We can hit Shinjuku and Ochanomizu as Kinuta suggests. Maybe you would be available too Kinuta?

Great store! Try to cycle over there a couple of times a month.

Thanks - sounds like a plan. I'll be a bit jet-lagged but raring to go (and probably spent up by the end of Day 1  ).

Could then do a return visit with kinuta a day or two later.

Sunday Oct 19th is fine with me.

A rendezous at Sidewinder's hotel would probably be the best bet, I wouldn't fancy his chances of finding a meeting place round the station.

If Sidewinder thinks this might be too much on top of jet lag, I could show him around any day from Mon-Thurs.

I'm retired and have few time limitations, apart from a dwindling supply of days on this mortal coil !!

Sidewinder, whatever you want to do is fine with me. If you want to meet up with John and meet me another day then we can do that.

We can all meet up on the 19th, and I can meet you again as suggested, you decide.

I also need to take you to the po and sort out the parcel bound for Blighty. One is open on Sunday but I think you'll find it all very knackering on your first day.

more ochanomizu pics...

looking towards the rear of the store, this is essentially what you see when you walk up from the street floor to the landing. the shot above (from kinuta) is from the rear looking forward.

Great pics! I love music store photos, whether in Japan or elsewhere. 'Store Porn' i guess.

I'm definitley jealous, would love to go to Japan again although i can't see it happening anytime in the near future. I was lucky enough to go there in 2006... at the time i hadn't been a dedicated jazz fan very long and i took the opportunity of being in Japan to pick up such rare, available-in-Japan-only gems as Bright Size Life, My Spanish Heart, Heliocentric Worlds Vol 1 & 2 and Al Di Meola's Land of the Midnight Sun and Splendido Hotel. :rlol

What I love about used records from Japan is the condition. I've been doing mail order from various Japanese websites since the early 90s(hello Early Records, etc) and their grading is meticulous. For the most part used records in Japan look like brand new as opposed to the often dog-eared flea market condition stuff you find in North America.

If I could fly to Japan and walk into a record store and find a mint 1st pressing of "Independence" by Masayuki Takayanagi I'd be pleased as punch!
