Albert Mangelsdorff - MPS reissues

In time for the 80th birthday of Albert Mangelsdorff (Sept 5, 1928 - July 25, 2005), Universal is delivering the goods again. If their other MPS boxes (George Duke, Art Van Damme etc) are an indication, these should be nice reissues! Here are some infos:

http://www.jazzecho.de/imposante_cdedition...8.08_140046.jsp

The main thing in short:

Two 5CD sets, two 2CD sets, 15 albums alltogether, remastered, with original artwork and liners. Albums included: Zo-Ko-Ma (finally!), Never Let It End, The Wide Point, A Jazz Tune I Hope, Trilogue - Live! etc.

As of this writing, I have the 2CD Live set on order, will report once I get it!

Holy moley! Yet.... this will be expensive!!

And it all could have been fit onto three 3-CD sets, 9 CD's total, rather than two 5CD sets and two 2CD sets, 14 CD's total. Feels a little exploitative in that sense, and a change from the other MPS sets I think.

I've always been curious about MUMPS - the Surman/Phillips/Martin group. I recall reading about them just as I started listening to jazz but never heard the record. Might give Vol 2 a go...there are some other interesting names there.

IIRC that's one of the best of the bunch. I found his studio album always a little restrained.

They should have recorded the band with Peter Giger live, they were wild. Too few live recordings by Albert's working band. Joe Behrendt was Orrin Keepnews European counterpart, in this respect.

Thanks, Mike. I think I've only heard him as a member (or guest) of the United Jazz Rock Ensemble which, I'd imagine, is hardly representative.

Rather not ... his working bands is only Birds of Underground - all others are "projects" - I don't understand why Berendt didn't record his regular group more often. Albert was much more avant-garde than these albums show, he was a regular member of Schlippenbach's Globe Unity. But he was versatile. I always found the United Jazz Rock Ensemble rather bland - no black groove. I heard him live so often I don't need any CDs to remember him.

No, they're being sold very cheaply (the 4CD sets by George Duke and Herbolzheimer cost around 50$ here, which is about half the prize such 4CD sets usually cost, so their decision not to fill up the CDs doesn't bother me the least!

Thanks a lot for filling in the details, I was posting from work and didn't have time to google it all up!

The two big ones look great, the live is on its way, and it's only a question of time until the solo one will be on order, too!

This one is availabel as a single CD reissue and not a part of any of the boxes ....

As Paul Secor said, a good one indeed!

This is one of the few of these MPS batches from some years back that remain available, alas...

Have earlier Mangelsdorff's (from the EP era) ever been reissued comprehensively?

I don't think so. These items achieve crazy prices on ebay, but no label cares for them it seems. The CBS LPs of Mangelsdorff's bands have been reissued by L+R Records. But not the earlier stuff. There has been one CD that Michael Frohne, the discographer, compiled, a very limited reissue, I'll have to search for this ...

Yes, I know what you mean. The drumming always sounded very stiff.

2 of the German CBS LP's (Now, Jazz Ramwong & Tension) are obtainable through L+R (and fairly cheap). Recently another of the German CBS LP's (Folk Mond & Flower Dream) was reissued on CD by NEKTAR (German label).

Interestingly Pacific Jazz issued an LP in the 60's called Now, Jazz Ramwong which has tracks from both the LP's issued by L+R.

just ordered my first mangelsdorff cd (now jazz ramwong) to check out whether i will need these for christmas...

That and "Tensions" or "One! Tension" or whatever was its original title are the best, in my opinion. The quintet was a great BAND, lots of great things going on, lots of earthy grooves, singing solos, free-ish stuff etc. The later music is different, less... fun? Less playful? Well, I guess not really, but it has a different vibe to it. It's not of lesser quality or anything, it's just that I don't connect to it so easily. Somewhere halfway is the Live in Tokyo/Live at Dug's or whatever that one's really called, that's a quartet album (quintet minus Kronberg, leaving Heinz Sauer on saxes) and it gets freeer (and less focused), compared to the earlier quintet albums. Anyway, except for United Jazz + Rock Ensemble, almost anything Mangelsdorff did is worth listening, in my opinion, and I'll be very happy to replace my old burns of the old "Three Originals" sets with these new boxes (I only had the trio one of the three originals like that, never had the other one, so most of this stuff is still new to me!)

one of the most remarkable things i read in an interview was in a heinz sauer interview from shortly after mangelsdorff died; iirc sauer had just recorded a mangelsdorff tribute album or the like; the journalist said something (very roughly) along the lines of "must be hard to lose an old friend like albert?" and sauer said something like "there were dozens of reasons for why there could at no point have been friendship between mangelsdorff and me, i would rather call it respect"

i mean, they weren't talking about, say, love... until then i had always (naively) thought that people who play in a (great, and not overly commercial) band together for years (decades) must be friends in one way or another... or at least, call themselves friends on the outside... (and mangelsdorff always looks so harmless and friendly, the other way around it would have surprised me less, but that sauer says "that guy could never have been a friend of mine")

I dunno - but jazz work is scarce over here, and Sauer would have been dumb to quit playing in one of the busiest bands on the scene.

That said - Sauer's playing is rather limited, IMO - the band they made after Albert changed personnel, Voices, had Albert's ex-sidemen with Bob Degen on piano, but it split when Günter Kronberg died, who was the hottest soloist in the band. I remember a gig where Kronberg blew all others off stage, including Sauer, Christof Lauer, and Gerd Dudek. Too bad he never recorded under his name. He was, IMO, the best saxist Albert ever had, and would have given Jackie Mac or anbody else a hrd time.
