Verve Originals, complete list

Since the Verve website is useless (and BTW, if anyone can find any contact info on that site, please direct me to it), I've put together what I think is the complete list of CDs in the Verve Originals series. Thanks to king ubu for directing me to past discussion threads about this subject. If you see any errors, PLEASE feel free to let me know. This list was culled together from the aforementioned threads, as well as searches at CD Universe (mainly) and a few other sites whose names escape me. Google helped a lot, too.

There are at least two more:

March 18, 2008

Louis Armstrong - New Orleans Nights

October 21, 2008

Jimmy Smith - Hobo Flats

How's the Armstrong?

We might need an occasional reminder that some of these are still available elsewhere (I know I don't always check in time <_< ). For instance Dizzy Cool World and Dizzy Goes Hollywood are both on the recent Mosaic box set, and Hobo Flats is on the Nelson Mosaic set. (I'm pretty sure Hobo Flats is one where the entire album shows up and not halfsies.)

Thanks for the list! The Armstrong is very fine, the original incarnation of the All Stars with Earl Hines and Teagarden. All the music is, I believe, on the oop Mosaic set.

And there's quite a few that can be found at Circuit City. These were at the Arlington Circuit City:

The Jazz Crusaders - Old Socks, New Shoes...New Socks, Old Shoes (well, not anymore since I bought it!)

Grover Washington Jr. - Inner City Blues

Ramsey Lewis Trio - Live at the Bohemian Caverns in Washington D.C.

Norman Brown - Just Between Us

Walter Beasley

Will Downing - A Dream Fulfilled

Dr. John - City Lights

Ramsey Lewis - Goin' Latin

Stan Getz - Sweet Rain

George Duke - Feel

George Benson - Tell It Like It Is*

Grover Washington, Jr. - Soul Box*

*These technically aren't out until 10/21, I don't know what kind of deal CC struck, but there you go.

Not the strongest list by any stretch, but I like it that CC even has ANY of these.

Probably more than what Borders has in stock

True statement. IIRC, the only ones the Borders in Arlington has are some of the Astrud Gilberto titles. Maybe a few Stan Getz bossa nova titles and the requisite Trane titles, but that's about it.

Good idea. I've updated the list to reflect that. :tup

No, I think you covered it all. I never knew that the VO was the successor to the LPR, but I can see how that would be assumed. I believe there were some titles that were issued between the LPRs and the VOs that, although they weren't classified as any kind of "series," seem to be a link between the two. There were three that were released in January 2006: Herb Ellis' Ellis in Wonderland, Howard Roberts' Good Pickin's, and Jimmy Raney featuring Bob Brookmeyer. I only have the Ellis, and I'll look on the jewel case when I get home to see if it mentions any kind of "series" on it.

I have the Ellis and the Raney... those are indeed "Originals" (of the jewel case variant - identical packing as the Ayler/Barbieri/Nelson etc batch) over here in Europe. So there are still some things missing... and of course many I'd like to have are still missing from my collection!

Interesting, because here in the States that batch is still LPR (I've got the Szabo, and I've seen the Lateef).

I do remember some other titles being released between the end of the LPR and the beginning of the VO here in the States. I'll see if I can't track those down at some point.

Yeah, I'm not sure either since I didn't get any of them. I did see them at Forever Young, and IIRC they had the same kind of blue side-spine as the "guitars" discs. Maybe worth another trip to FY at lunch to see if they still have them and if they are marked that way.
