BruceH
This is reminding me of that TCM thing that shows clips of all the actors/screenwriters/directors and other movie people that have passed away in the past year. Interesting, almost salutary, and a total bummer at the same time.

Jim Alfredson
Oops... I spoke too soon. David Weiss says in the Freddie Hubbard ICU thread that he's still recovering. I got an email in my inbox this morning that he had passed.

Big Beat Steve
Franz Jackson ( 1912 - 2008 ) Uh oh ... another unsung Swing era man. 96 years ... admittedly I had no idea he still was alive. Seems a fitting tribute that photos of Franz in action are now circulating a bit more widely on the net thanks to the Life online photo archives (see related threads, check out the Gjon Mili 1943 jam sessions). WorldB3
Walt Dickerson Damn, I didn’t even discover him until this year when I picked up For My Queen; it’s been one of my favorite records to play this year, for some reason I just really connect with it (aside from the Andrew Hill factor who plays beautifully on it). I have also been really digging Vibes In Motion and Life Rays. I didn’t even hear about him passing, the lame thing is that it was probably that I didn’t recognize the name when he did pass because I had yet to know his music. I know post pop, free Jazz vibraphone isn’t exactly something that’s going to be on everybody’s radar but I should have been hip to him a long time ago. RIP Mr. Dickerson.
