Regarding the 1946-1947 period I strongly recommend the 3-CD Hindsight set "Duke Ellington and his World Famous Orchestra 46-47". It contains 64 tracks recorded for radio broadcasts in state-of-the-art sound. The music, as you can assume, is superb.

That's the Capitol Transcriptions, right?

How about the Circle CDs, are those also "must haves"?

There are 45 Ellington CDs in the Classics collection. Last three released were 1350, 1398 and 1432.

In toto, Classics has released 855 CDs since its inception in 1990.

Anyone have an idea when we can expect the next Gene Ammons Classics disc?

It should cover the last tune from the Savoy "Red Top" album (Big Slam Pt 1+2)

and the complete 1954 and 1955 session for Prestige, thus filling the final blanks

in Jug's discography on CD (Fantasy still hasn't released some tracks from those

sessions on CD...) up until and possibly partially including "The Happy Blues".

I did not include the R'n'B series in my figures. The latest issued CD being #1455, and including the "Complementary Tracks" 3 CD-set that I had overlooked, I was nearly right. They issued a staggering 856 titles in the jazz series. More than 1000 issues if we include the R'n'B batch (I do not know what figure that series has reached.)

Not that it matters much - but either you or me got that wrong: The first Classics was 500 - the latest 1454 (not 1455). That makes 955 issues in toto, doesn't it ?

Not counting all B&R-issues. Not counting the single Classics -Sampler and the 3CD-Box with complimentary tracks.

Anyone interested in the Louisiana Rhythm Kings would do better to purchase the Jazz Oracle cd, which probably has better sound, has an alternate, and has about 30 pages of excellent notes!

I'd be pleased to (for a couple of other Jazz Oracle reissues too) but can ANYBODY tell me why their Dutch distributor, TIMELESS Records steadfastly refuses to acknowledge, let alone answer my mails inquiring about shipping costs? And this even after sending several mails? (They are closest to Germany among all non-US distributors, hence my inquiry with them)

The winner of that auction was green_380 who claims he is liquidating his jazz collection on ebay in order to move to Italy I think. He has been selling for about one year or so.Maybe longer. I wonder if he plans to sell these to his loyal customers? Appears that he may have found a new line of work!

If green_380 resides in these parts no offense intended. I did have to chuckle though. He has sold quite a collection on ebay as many of you probably know. Guess he just can't leave it all behind.

For years I've been wondering about what happened to the Classics label. When I finally reached the age and landed the kind of job that would allow me to start collecting the discs in a serious manner, the label suddenly seemed to have dropped off the face of the Earth. So I must say I was happy to find this thread when I trawled the net for info.

Still, the links I find here don't offer very many titles. Is there any info on what will happen with all the old out-of-print issues? (I'm still missing one single CD to make my Fats Waller series complete.)

Hi Knutte, and welcome to the board.

Classics came out with a monthly batch of 5 titles from early 1990 to August 2004 (up to volume 1379) and all earlier releases remained in print during that time. After that Classics ran into problems that did not have to do with Petard himself. There were distribution problems (the original distributor may have gone out of business, I don't remember exactly). Also, a partner to Petard didn’t want to continue with the label and its future was seriously threatened.

After a long hiatus during which various problems had been sorted out, the label resumed releasing new titles in July 2005. In the meantime many older titles had gone OOP. An announcement was made that many OOP titles were going to be re-pressed (which also happened), and that all titles would be made available again eventually (which hasn’t happened).

Classics has however once again run into problems with several months between batches, and I think even some of the re-pressed titles going OOP again. A good part of the reason may be the generally dwindling CD sales. The late 80s to the early 00s were a golden era for jazz reissues, but it’s apparently a lot tougher financially now, and that affects Classics as well.

I’m going from memory of what I've read in the paragraphs above but hope I got it reasonably correct. Jaffa is the liner notes writer and has access to inside information. His latest post, as you can see says “Things with Classics are complicated - to say the least.”. I guess that’s where we are now. We don't know what will happen with forthcoming and OOP titles, and maybe even Petard doesn't.

I can't add much to what you wrote. You put it all in a nutshell. Basically, it's very simple: How can you make ends meet when new issues of Classics (or any other CDs for that matter) pop up days (not weeks) after their release on notorious internet-sites where they can be downloaded for free ? With fully scanned booklets, of course...

And yes, to the best of my knowledge, not even Gilles Pétard knows exactly how to carry on. As I wrote here several times before, I'll let this forum know when there are NEWS not RUMOURS.
