Executive producer: Charlie Lourie

Masteried by Malcolm Addey

Sessions H,I and J are stereo. All others are mono.

Producer's Note

This set contains all of the sessions that Stuff Smith made for Verve as a leader. A 1957 Paris encounter with Stephane Grappelli, while often listed in Verve discographies, was a Norman Granz master that was finally issued on Pablo a few years ago.

While there is a wealth of unissued material on this set, the version of "Desert Sands" that he recorded on the January 21, 1957 session is sadly not among them. At some point, someone took a razor blade and slice through the entire tune. It literally would take weeks to reassemble and, because the cuts weren't clean, would probably never be in listenable shape.

All of the sessions are in chronological order with one exception. The Stuff Smith-Dizzy Gillespie session precedes the marathon March sessions with Oscar Peterson so that they can fit onto one CD uninterrupted.

I was talking to Mosaic the other day and they mentioned that they will be changing their web site soon. I told them that I hope they keep all the directory structures the same so we could continue to access these old discographies. My statement caught them a bit off guard so I explained to them what we do here with the links. They really liked that we still use these discographies and they are looking into having them in the "No Longer Available" section of the new web site. Hopefully this happens.

However, in the chance that they don't do this, anyone who wants to back these old discographies up, should do so soon. I have no idea when the changeover will happen but you don't want to wait until they're gone.

Later,

Kevin

Good idea, Kevin. I know we have many of them posted here and some of us have some of them stored on our computers, but perhaps we can make a dedicated threat (not unlike this one) that organizes the lists better. Does anyone know which ones (of those once available) are missing?

I wonder if there is interest in having this information available in an improved format (with track timings and composers integrated rather than in a separate section from session info).

For users here who would be willing to download the free BRIAN discographical database software (Windows or Mac), I could supply the contents of many Mosaic (and other) boxed sets - I think more than 75 at this point (including many "hypothetical" boxed sets like "Complete Jimmy Heath Riverside Sessions"). If we could find some industrious set-owners, the data for additional sets could be entered and then made available to other BRIAN users, either on a individual session basis or in a zip file of every session in a boxed set.

The benefits of having it in database format rather than plain text would be significant (of course, you could easily "print" a report in html format). For sample reports, just look at any of my discographies on www.JazzDiscography.com

Just in terms of Mosaic sets: Basie Live, Basie Studio, Blakey, Byrd/Adams, Cherry, Cole, DeFranco, Donaldson, Fuller, Giuffre, Green, Hill, Jazztet, JJ Johnson, McLean, Mingus Candid, Mitchell, Mobley, Moncur, Morgan, Pearson, Rivers, Rogers, Jimmy Smith.

And I'm adding new stuff every day. Other BRIAN users are working on the stuff like the Commodore sets.

After having dealt with the good, the bad, and the ugly in text discographies for years, I'm thoroughly sold on the database format and would love to help others see the light.

Mike:

I just took a look at the BRIAN screens via your website. This looks very cool. I will continue reading...

That is extremely helpful. Does anyone have a link to the discography for the Nat King Cole set. That would would be very, very helpful.

You can find the NKCT sessionography, as copied from the Mosaic set, here:

http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artists/Cole/NKCT.html

This was created using my Brian program.

I believe the information we're interested in is still laying around somewhere on the internet. It's a matter of digging it up again.

Check out this link, for example:

Remember this old friend, the picture of Hank on the Mosaic front page?

Jim,

The link is a couple of posts up from Steve Albin. What I was looking for was links to all the Mosaic discographies that Mike said he had done but it turns out they're only available through the Brian software although somehow the NKC discorgraphy is on this link but then if you shorten the link to see the list of artists, NKC doesn't appear. I don't know if I confused the matter further but I guess it's not a big deal.
