More sads news, as reported by Roger over on AAJ..

Guardian Obit

I wasn't aware of the fact that he'd met Parker and Monk but was aware of his 1960s albums recorded for Dennis Preston in the UK and also his work with The Duke.

'Emergent Drums' (Columbia)

'Afro Jazz' (Regal Zonophone?)

'The African Zoundz of Guy Warren of Ghana' (Regal Zonophone)

With Rendell/Carr - 'Change Is' (Columbia)

That's he who wrote that beautiful song "Mystery of Love", right? I enjoy that each time I hear a Randy Weston recording of it!

R.I.P.

I only know the one tune Ubu mentioned, but was always curious about him. Is there anything available?

This album is an early example of a jazz/African drumming hybrid (discounting the fact that jazz derived in part from African music, duh...)

An informative obit here from The Times.

I'm sure I saw a TV programme many years ago with him, Ginger Baker and others jamming in an African village. Would love to see that again.

Guy Warren recorded two library albums for KPM:  Native Africa 1 and Native Africa 2.  Both of these are available as lossless downloads from Qobuz.  I may have to get these.

I have his African Drums RCA LP and also Africa Speaks, America Answers on Decca.

HIs other Decca album African Rhythms is very hard to find.

I don't have any of those UK albums that were referenced earlier.

‘Afro Jazz’ was given a (good) vinyl reissue by a Canadian company not too long ago.
